Firstly again, let me say I really am a complete novice at this.

Ok,

So I set up a website and I decide to call it (hyperthetically of course) dontbuyanewcar. com. A website that allows car buyers to access info on nearly new cars at great prices. (This is purely an example).

what I need to happen is when someone does a search on new cars or any other car buying reference, I want my site to appear as high as possible on google. Which of course, Im guessing is the ultimate goal of everyone.

Can someone please explain to me what is involved in doing this. ie is it a huge cost implication? is it hard work? If so, what kind of work is involved. Is it purely a time issue?

Also are there any rules in the interwebby world that would stop me having a website name that encourages someone not to buy something or not use a particular product (as long as Im not too specific, obv). As in the above example dontbuyanewcar.

Thanks in advance for your help

Andy

Grab a cup of coffee and reserve some time to read that through, read the blog seobook.com as well.

You can also buy Aaron's ebook, which would be the only ebook i can recommend actually.
Get a subscription to his members section to use the tools available.

Basically you need to learn more about on page and off page search engine optimization, and you'll find out whta that exactly is reading through the above sources. ;)

Thanks Deliajen, but what do you mean add links and more links? Links to and from where?

Optimising each page separately

Another useful tip I've heard is to make sure each page of your site has its own distinct content, with a unique title, headings and relevant text to that particular area, not duplicated from another page. eg a page on a particular type of car (hybrids for example)This website has some good tips on SEO...
