What would you do?

Evening All,

I am about a month into this domaining business and have been muddling through, buying rubbish names, messing wordpress up and generally doing everything badly but not too worry I am so much more experienced now so it can only get better.

On my daily forage into finding decent domain names; today I stumbled across a plural single dictionary word, on a .co.uk ext, the only thing is I would have no idea what to do with it? The .com and some others have gone, the singular .co.uk has gone but not developed.

What would you do? would you buy it because it's only the price of a reg and see what comes up or would you pass it by?

I am led to believe that these type of domains are the holy grail but I am at a loss what to use it for, it is not a terrible domain name just unsure of how to develop it?

You may have already done this but what about checking out what has been done with the .com, .net,etc?

May well be nothing or just a landing page with ads - but just in case you haven't checked...

Is it a tangible product or service, or is it something conceptual or emotional or abstract, or, say, medical or religious ? Does it have a geographical angle ? Is it an obscure variant on colour or size ? Is it something that typically exists in the plural or really just the singular ? Is the spelling and nature of the product mainstream English, or is it highly niche ? Is it more than x words long ?

So, what do YOU feel intuitively ? What's YOUR gut reaction ? Does it feel natural to YOU ? If it is aardvarks.co.uk, hypothetically, is that more valuable to a plumber or minicab company (because of alphabetical Yellow Pages placement) than a pet shop ?

I'm not saying don't speculate with six quid with two years left for it to come good, I'm just probing to see what you personally really feel about it.

I had a quick look at the .com and it' a bit of a mish mash in my opinion about biblical prophecies, not my bag so can't really comment

I do rememder stumbling across a facility to check the domain name history but for the life of me I can't remember where it was, if anyone knows the site please let me know.

Not register it? I certainly wouldn't have bothered, can't see any commercial potential in it and it's not "brandable" either.

Worth repeating: just because a domain's a "dictionary word" doesn't mean ANYTHING. The modern dictionary contains millions of words, the majority of which have no commercial significance in a domaining context.

With regards to the domain you have registered, I don't value it.

If you can't think of anything that a domain could be used for when considering registering or purchasing it, the chances are it won't be any good.

Obviously that's quite a broad statement, but generally true.

Actually, it's the opposite: a very large part of being a "domain name investor" is learning when NOT to take the plunge. Jumping into registering names is one of the biggest "newbie mistakes" and a habit that is worth breaking as quickly as possible - healthier on the wallet, for a start...

Put another way: owning 100 or 1,000 worthless names doesn't make anyone a "domain name investor" - it just makes them a whole lot poorer!

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it's worth taking the time to dig much deeper into the commercial potential of a name before forking out the registration fee.

If I were you I would have an idea about what to do with something before I bought it.

Just because names are cheap to buy, it doesn't mean you should buy them.

My advice is do your research very carefully before buying, and have a clear end goal in mind before buying.

Before buying too many new names, pick one to three of your names for active reselling, and see if you can get them sold. If you can make some profit you might be on to something If not, then you've learnt something too.

For what it's worth, some info on tribulations.co.uk.

Previous owner registered it on 3/2/2005 and let it expire 3/2/11 which means it dropped on 3/5/11 (or thereabouts can't be bothered to work out exact date ) and there would have quite a few domainers on here that would would have seen it on their droplists and chose not to register it then or up to two months after which I think gives you some idea of it's value to members here.

Thanks everyone for your sound and brutually honest advice and observations. It is clear that I have a lot to learn but learn I will!

I have been concerned that I am unable too bring much to the party in terms of advice for others; ironically these silly mistakes I keep making are bringing out some brilliant advice for all newbies to learn from so all is not in vain.

I am on a massive learning curve at the moment and my brain cells are struggling to keep up with the amount of information I am feeding them, I am now going to settle down and work on the 3 or 4 minisites I have started so for the forseable future I will be messing up wordpress, content units and god knows what else

Why the concern? I'm sure nobody expects somebody new to ANY field to be advising others at the same time they learn the rudiments of their chosen subject. There will be plenty of time to share your expertise when you've honed your skills

Indeed - Your learning curve, will probably reflect that of each of us here. Quite a few very good individuals took their time with me back as far as i can remember. If you actually get switched-on by domains you will find "your own perspective" is seen as valid input - even for us old boys.

It's the "I know it all already" from day one souls that get rightly ignored.

PS i wouldn't touch a domain like "Tribulations" either - possibly in .com if I was feeling trivial

Everyone buys no value domains when they start out and some of us still do . It's all about experience and that will come with time.
