advertise their domains on their own (private/personal) vehicles, is there a law that prevent this? Seems like for the sake of a few quid you could get a lot of eyeballs on your sites over a period of time...

Do you mean put a sheet of paper in the back window? Or professional vinyl clings on the window/body?

I might do the clings if I had a big online biz but not to sell my domains for a few of reasons:
1. I'm embarrassed by a lot of the domains
2. Paper in the back of window is too cheap and vinyl too expensive
3. The people who'd see them probably aren't the right customers.

I used to have my own domain under the number plate the plate is MO12 LEY (Surname is MORLEY) then under it, I had www.STEVEN.co.uk in smaller print.

I didn't bother getting it done when changed car.

My friend Carley who is a make up artist had business name, number and her website on the side of her car she said she got non stop pervs, and sometimes guys in the car next to her phoning to "chat".

Adding anything to a car - including a web address - can be seen as a "modification" by insurers and it can invalidate your insurance unless you inform them.

I would have thought worse case it would change your S&SDC to Business Use if your talking big ads and such. Kinda like declaring a home office ?

Mine was part of the number plate, originally it had a dealer URL there like this one http://www.exchangeandmart.co.uk/us.../l15a-dp-plate-number-plate-for-sale-15913676 but I had a new one made up, so where that CrownHonda.co.uk mine had my URL on the rear of the car. I didn't notify the insurance.

Worse case is that you don't inform them and your insurance is invalidated.

I just phoned a few up, one said it depends if the policy includes signage or not, most business insurance includes it. Axa said it may even lower the cost of insurance it makes the vehicle more identifiable.

When I spoke to consumer insurance companies their view was it may not invalidate your policy but you WILL likely pay through the nose and retroactively alter policy and incur admin charges.

It was clear that if it "significantly" alters the appearance of the vehicle so as to make it unrecognizable for example a full wrap like those red bull ones, then your screwed.

No one were sure of window signs tho, you know like those Sun visors across the top of your windscreen or transfer stickers etc.

I guess absolute worst case your right though.

Oh where your insurance includes it, apparently it's on the form to say sign writing so you cant just do it.

I once saw a 15+ year old BMW car with big ads for a tanning salon on it. To me it just suggested that the salon wasn't very successful as the ads looked out of place on a car rather than a van, especially an old banger. Unless the vehicle is new or a van or eccentric in some way, the ad can give a negative impression.

Zoopla.co.uk advertise their business this way. Have you seen their purple cars?

I seem to see a lot of sign-written vans using Gmail or other free Internet services. They probably don't realise that they could get a decent domain and point it to Gmail, which would look way more professional.

Next time you see one like that, it could be your next domain sale opportunity! sell them a nice generic domain and tell them how to use it with their existing services.

I can't understand why vehicle roofs are never, or very rarely signed.

Look at the audience from busses, flats and offices as well as elevated vehicles.

I had a Matt grey wrap and it doubled my insurance.same car, driver etc. totally illogical
