Hi, I have just recently ventured into websites after deciding I needed to generate my own clients (I am a mortgage broker in Spain).
So I followed a lot of online guides, found Wordpress, started my site, stopped for about two weeks while I went off at about a million different tangents, got completely bogged down reading the myriad of ways in which I can magically make 100,000$ per year in my pyjamas - in a week

Anyway SEO was the main thing I have been reading up on and have to say my site is actually working! Have had lots of inquiries from it so very pleased.
Now that's ticking along nicely, I am turning my attentions to retiring on adsense!!!

I have to thank Scott and Al for their brilliant site - SelfMadeMinds.com - truly inspirational reading and actually explains step-by-step how they go about making money and how much. Very very useful info.
I know Scott posts on here - So thank you very much!

I aslo found Making a Living Online with Caroline Middlebrook very useful as a total beginner with Wordpress. There is a downloadable guide on there which is essential reading for a complete novice.

This is one of the best forums I have found especially two threads in particular detailing earnings, portfolios etc. To see and read info from those who have made the mistakes (and the money) long before me is an enormous help!!!

I have a couple of general questions so will go and find the appropriate place to post them now.

hi andydw.
and welcome to AD:p

good to see you are doing your homework instead of jumping straight in.
what are your worst and best names?

Likewise - thats not a nooooooob post at all :) Welcome!

I havent registered many yet, I keep finding "really good ones" and almost registering them. I registered my first at the end of July. Saved me quite a bit of money so far. The main one was tenerife//mortgage//broker//.com which is just for my business so not designed to encourage people to leave to another site.

I have used a very popular forum to give relevant advice and that gets me quite a few visitors. Content has been easy as this is something I know pretty much everything about and keep up to speed on. I dont get hundreds of visits but then again I only really want potential clients who are actually ready to apply for a mortgage.

I have been comparing the number of contact page visits with email enquiries and trying to adjust it to increase lead generation but havent noticed any significant response.

Also registered realestatesongdo.com - no traffic research whatsoever - just read a couple of articles about Songdo in North Korea being massive in the future and figured I would have a punt. It has a basic holding page.

Two others I registered - badly! Forgot to change the stats on google keyword from broad so they are most likely not going to be winners.

Another I registered was the name of a new holiday apartment complex that I am interested in - Swaying Palms in the Dominican Republic. I took swaying-palms.com. Another punt based on this place becoming well known in the future as it starts being advertised for sale on lots of real estate portals. I would probably look to sell it on to an estate agent - or rent it.

I am now looking for a niche, something I can concentrate on and attempt to corner rather than registering loads of domains and leaving them unused. I have decided to fully develop one domain at a time - learn from the mistakes and start the next. So hopefully they should get better as I go along.
I would prefer to buy established sites that aren't being looked after/owner has lost interest etc but I am not a web designer and am limited to Wordpress sites really until I learn more.

You seem to be on the right tracks! Welcome to AD! Let the fun begin! :)

Rich

Welcome Andy,

You don't come across as a newb to me, sounds like you have done your research, which is 95% of this game :p

Jim

I hope so! I guess I will find out soon enough if I have learned enough to make money.

There is an excellent post here which gives a very short but succinct guide to keyword research.

I hope admins dont mind me linking to a blog but it is a very good article.
Any opinions from the pros that can add anything to this info here are very valuable to me as I think this is the course of action I am most likely going to follow (have been following).
