I'm just chucking this out there as a gut feeling of how I see it at moment..

Discount Code Sites will start to die out soon and most will be dead within next few years (especially the small players) with only a handful of trusted players used by bigger merchants surviving

next Price Comparison Sites will start to die in the the next 3 years, users will get bored of the whole concept, and come back around to trawling the goodo'l web as usual after they've realised its just money for old rope, and again most will be dead within next few years with only a handful of trusted players used by bigger merchants carrying on..

(just like we had the rise of the directory sites early 2000 with scoot etc, most will die a slow death..)

generic, product related, fixed commodity domains will become very valuable

Big affilaite sites will tighten up on the quality of affiliates joining even more as big merchants will want quality promotion for their brands and programs.

Bing will ovetake Yahoo with in 2 years as number 2 search engine..

int he next 2 years web design compaies of the late nineties will be completely found out - becoming surplus to requirment as your average joe bloggs will just use a Mr Site form PC world more and more, everything will be CMS

I thought everything already was CMS, it just took a web designer to help you figure out how best to use it and bung a design in. Not everyone has the time to do things themselves, hence why cleaners aint quite been replaced by automatic robots and even then they will need maintaining.

Code, comparison sites have always been around, always will be, as long as everything is at a different price, then they will be useful. generic, product related, fixed commodity domains will become very valuable - no change there then.

i'm not sure what you mean, you mean networks? it's a bit difficult for networks to go round selecting and choosing affiliates as affiliates by their natural entity are scruffy go luckys looking for some wedge, just so happens some of them get good and hit the big time. Networks cutting them out, I don't think so.

Bing is yahoo, google may take a knock, I doubt they will care, I doubt anyone else will care if msn or yahoo are second or third, no medal for those places in search.

No revelations, all the above old hat, new tech will change things, it always does, figure out what the new tech will be to change things, not old rubbish replacing the same old rubbish.

The next few years... think touchless and I'm sure that was unregged when it dropped as I liked that... anyway, think touchless and integrated tech and how that will change the net and access of information and display. Unfortunately everything you listed will be the same as it was five years ago, just people will be doing it different, as if directory sites ever went away and some are quite profitable. It's how info gets accessed, used and exchanged that continually changes and the gadgets garnered to achieve that.

Perhaps on this side of the pond, no chance in the US.

Small ones will die, larger ones will survive. If they can afford TV ads now, they are going to gain market share from the death of the small sites.

It is getting harder to sign into affiliate programs - true. So sites that exist now, with proven revenue, will get more valuable, and new sites will have trouble getting into the marketplace. But the net result of these effects is that SEO will become more important.

Bing will ovetake Yahoo with in 2 years as number 2 search engine..

There are a lot of "non-english" engines that might beat both into a cocked hat. Ananzi (South African, translates as "You Wot? from Zulu) was bought out, blinded and gelded for being "too good" a couple of years ago. There's a couple of others in with a chance ...

Well, I can see the logic - it is only coding, and the existing companies are living on Krypto-knowledge and the promise of effective SEO, but there's a heap of grot software in the market for web design. People are put off by the cost of Dreamweaver. It is difficult to beat Dreamweaver overall - the only real competition comes from Coffee Cup, everything else is either "hard work" or "buggy".

While I have to agree on this point, I can see a situation in the next few years where IBM and/or Microsoft becomes the market leader. Microsoft have put a lot into their product lately, IBM are going with web2 concepts, AJAX and mashups. This is leading to a place where having a "programmer's mind" is all you need - and some software that give you what you want, not what it decides you want!

Im not worrying to much, the world ends in 2012!! :)

Sure... small businesses might start building their own sites, but Mr Site will never give a user the high level of unique professional design that they can get from a proper web design company. I'm not talking about those crappy little web design shops that knock out sites for £50 but proper professional web designers.

That said, there will be an increase in large companies spending more money on their websites and when the budget gets higher they'll likely start moving web design in house rather than outsourcing (mainly because it becomes cheaper and faster to hire staff and build in house).

small biz and joe bloggsw are the majority.

big biz is big biz and always will be.

my poin tis based around accessability - 3 years ago it was still a bit of a 'big deal' to have your own website -
now its feck all, old hat..

in fact you've got 14y/o kids knocking out lovely looking sites all W3C'd up now ... 'Professional web designers' won't really exist soon.. 'web design' is legacy of 90's - if we talking major, scalable projects then we are talking applications... and yes that counts out your weekend code warriors like myself and 99% of this forum. (no offence to anyone)

..now, wheres my pot noodle...

... but no-one knows how old you are online! If you take a look at my site WebRef.eu there are a number of Web Design resource pages which should help them out.
