Hi everyone. Just wanted to pick your brains.

My portfolio is around 150 domains .co.uk at the moment and growing. I pay £3.40 inc VAT for 2 years using fasthosts and buying bulk credits to get the price down.

I dont know how much tag holders pay but is the £400 joining fee and the annual fee of £200 ?? (I think) worth doing for me. ???

Your comments are much appreciated.

Joining and annual membership fees are listed on Nominet's web site. Unfortunately none of us are paid to look that up for you. :) You'll pay £6 inc VAT per domain name for 2 years as a member. I'd be astounded if Fasthosts are selling at a loss. Are you sure it isn't £3.40 inc VAT for 1 year? Check then do the mathematics. If it's only about the money it costs you and you don't want any of the facilities one gains from being a tag holder it probably isn't worth it.

Laz, have you not been a member here before?

I dont get this becouse yes its for 2 years and its a little cheaper then id thought. 40 credits work out at £3.27 including VAT - How come ?
and if you buy 100 you get them for £3.18 !! thats nearly 50% cheaper then what a nominet member would get......

Why would they be making a loss ?? and a big loss too unless they get them cheaper somehow !

Cheers Laz

It is not so much about the cost, it is "owning" control of your portfolio, if you read the many "xxxxx" lost this, didn't renew that threads, then even 1 half decent domain would justify membership!

If it is all about the cost, then look at the Nominet site and do the maths

I think your calculations are incorrect. It doesn't mention two years on that screenshot, so it's more than likely going to be for one year.

Also the prices are excluding VAT, so the package of 40 would actually equal around £3.28 per credit.

Scratch that, I'll only confuse matters :)

Hi Monaghan. Sorry for being a little blonde. Im not sure I get what you mean.. Im on the fence in becoming a member so as much info will be great.

Hi Caz.. No I joined last week. whys that ??

Yea a little confusing. The domains I have registered recently are for 2 years for sure. Now if it takes 2 credits for the two years Im not sure but I will find out and get back. I am on my 19th domain after buying 40 credits so when i'm registering number 21 I will know for sure

Regards Laz

If your decision about whether to become a member is purely cost driven then we suggest you do the mathematics.

Possibly because you're asking questions that you could answer by yourself using Google, searching through and reading this forum and with some mathematics.

I'd be surprised if that registrar is selling at a loss compared to the base registrar prices (above link).

your misreading the Chart.

"domain Credits remain valid for two years" - This is not the same as the registration period.

All those extensions listed are one year - one year registrations have been available for UK domains for about a year now

What I mean, is it is YOUR money, YOUR time, YOUR portfolio, YOU need to put a value on your time & your portfolio and then decide whether to become a member or to stay with a public registrar.

If you are only concerned by cost, then get a bargain registrar and hope for the best, but don't come back here complaining when a domain is lost.

Slightly off-topic, but to go back to a couple of the previous questions, some registrars are happy to only make a few pence or even sell/give away domains (e.g. however many free with a hosting package) at a 'loss' because they want you to buy hosting. And similarly to shops wanting you to buy gift cards, they want you to buy credits because it's guaranteed spend on your part.

Some of the dodgier (mostly lesser known) registrars will also have extremely cheap registration prices and then crazy expensive renewals.

Ok, here's the breakdown.

Nominet membership costs £400 and there's a £100/year annual fee. Both prices before VAT, so you're looking at £480 and £120 respectively. As a Nominet Registrar, you'll be able to register domains for £5+VAT for 2 years, i.e. £6 total.

If you buy bulk credits 100 at a time, you're paying £2.65 each. That's £5.30 for 2 years before VAT, or £6.36 with VAT. In other words, you're paying 36p more than going direct, or 18p per year.

Forgetting the application fee for a moment, you'd need to have 667 domains registered in order to cover the £120/year membership fee (667 x 18p = £120.06) in pure savings.

Of course, there are other non-monetary considerations, as others in this thread have already highlighted, but (if my math's right) that's the money side of things...

Yes I can confirm that two credit are used but I can use 1 credit for one year if I need to.

Hi again Monaghan. Im not worried about forgetting to renew my domains. I alway keep on track of that kind of thing. As they are all on auto renew it will only fail if my method of payment changes and I would get lots of warning / time to resolve it.

Thanks Edwin. Nice Math ! Thats what I realy wanted to know as I didnt at the start. Im a way off 667 Domains /)

Putting the savings in perspective and its a shame that I would be buying them at a loss if I joined nominet at the moment Its all about cost of registering a domain and I dont intend to use any of the other features from nominet at the moment. Fasthosts is the cheapest option.

Thanks Guys. LAz

The fact that you couldn't do the basic mathematics and work it out without Edwin having to do it for you unfortunately speaks volumes. It astounds me. Anyway would you mind sharing your top ten domain names here? :)

The forum and net are littered with stories of domains not being renewed without warning even though payment method hasn't changed. This can be down to registrar error or even more sinister motives. You CANNOT rely on automated renewals - you must keep track of everything yourself.

Don't want to get into a silly argument on here... BUT i must say this..

Please re read Post number 1 it clearly states I do not know how much nominet charges are for TAG holders...

It would be a very dead forum if nobody asked questions on here.

If you have nothing good to say then don’t say anything.

I did not ask anyone to take the time out to work it out for me..

I thanked Edwin and said "Nice Math" for his time...

You do not know me so do not insult me again..

And can you please not reply when I have directly asked a particular member a question.

As for my top 10 domains... who cares ! Is it a prerequisite on here before you gain any respect ??

Anyways.. Thank you again to all users that have given me useful information.

Laz

With the greatest of respect, but is it that difficult to go to the Nominet web site and look for the info?

http://www.nominet.org.uk/become-registrar/fees is linked to from the front page menu and contains all you could possibly need.

I had a rough idea of the cost but as stated at the start I thought it was 40 credits for £130 od quid. Not knowing that... That means 2 credits was used for 2 years. I felt that I was missing something. I dont know if nominet offer bulk discount. Thought it would be best to ask the "experts" before I make the decision to go with nominet or stay with fasthosts. I didnt know. Thats why I asked....

I own / help run a successful forum myself. I would never tell anyone to go find answers elsewhere. My forum would die very fast..

Sorry for wasting anyones time !

Laz
