Hi everyone. Just wanted to pick your brains.

My portfolio is around 150 domains .co.uk at the moment and growing. I pay £3.40 inc VAT for 2 years using fasthosts and buying bulk credits to get the price down.


I dont know how much tag holders pay but is the £400 joining fee and the annual fee of £200 ?? (I think) worth doing for me. ???

Joining and annual membership fees are listed on Nominet's web site. Unfortunately none of us are paid to look that up for you. You'll pay £6 inc VAT per domain name for 2 years as a member. I'd be astounded if Fasthosts are selling at a loss. Are you sure it isn't £3.40 inc VAT for 1 year? Check then do the mathematics. If it's only about the money it costs you and you don't want any of the facilities one gains from being a tag holder it probably isn't worth it.

I dont get this becouse yes its for 2 years and its a little cheaper then id thought. 40 credits work out at £3.27 including VAT - How come ?
and if you buy 100 you get them for £3.18 !! thats nearly 50% cheaper then what a nominet member would get......

Why would they be making a loss ?? and a big loss too unless they get them cheaper somehow !

It is not so much about the cost, it is "owning" control of your portfolio, if you read the many "xxxxx" lost this, didn't renew that threads, then even 1 half decent domain would justify membership!

If it is all about the cost, then look at the Nominet site and do the maths

I think your calculations are incorrect. It doesn't mention two years on that screenshot, so it's more than likely going to be for one year.

Also the prices are excluding VAT, so the package of 40 would actually equal around £3.28 per credit.

If your decision about whether to become a member is purely cost driven then we suggest you do the mathematics.

your misreading the Chart.

"domain Credits remain valid for two years" - This is not the same as the registration period.

All those extensions listed are one year - one year registrations have been available for UK domains for about a year now

What I mean, is it is YOUR money, YOUR time, YOUR portfolio, YOU need to put a value on your time & your portfolio and then decide whether to become a member or to stay with a public registrar.

If you are only concerned by cost, then get a bargain registrar and hope for the best, but don't come back here complaining when a domain is lost.

Slightly off-topic, but to go back to a couple of the previous questions, some registrars are happy to only make a few pence or even sell/give away domains (e.g. however many free with a hosting package) at a 'loss' because they want you to buy hosting. And similarly to shops wanting you to buy gift cards, they want you to buy credits because it's guaranteed spend on your part.

Some of the dodgier (mostly lesser known) registrars will also have extremely cheap registration prices and then crazy expensive renewals.

Ok, here's the breakdown.

Nominet membership costs £400 and there's a £100/year annual fee. Both prices before VAT, so you're looking at £480 and £120 respectively. As a Nominet Registrar, you'll be able to register domains for £5+VAT for 2 years, i.e. £6 total.

If you buy bulk credits 100 at a time, you're paying £2.65 each. That's £5.30 for 2 years before VAT, or £6.36 with VAT. In other words, you're paying 36p more than going direct, or 18p per year.

Forgetting the application fee for a moment, you'd need to have 667 domains registered in order to cover the £120/year membership fee (667 x 18p = £120.06) in pure savings.

Of course, there are other non-monetary considerations, as others in this thread have already highlighted, but (if my math's right) that's the money side of things...

It would be a very dead forum if nobody asked questions on here.

I had a rough idea of the cost but as stated at the start I thought it was 40 credits for £130 od quid. Not knowing that... That means 2 credits was used for 2 years. I felt that I was missing something. I dont know if nominet offer bulk discount. Thought it would be best to ask the "experts" before I make the decision to go with nominet or stay with fasthosts. I didnt know. Thats why I asked....

I own / help run a successful forum myself. I would never tell anyone to go find answers elsewhere. My forum would die very fast..
