Direct.uk is ongoing.....

It was never NOT ongoing. They said as much in April, that there would be a re-evaluation and update in July.

It was the media, and wishful thinkers here, that said it was dead. Nominet certainly never have.

The call of those secret bonuses are to strong.

Fantastic news for 95% of the posters in Acorn?

Is that a fair comment?

No. This has already been covered in extraordinary detail in the massively long thread about the original direct.uk proposal, and in other related threads.

I'm not sure I'm going to immerse myself in that on a glorious Sunday morning, but to me, average Joe, with a chance to nab some generic.uk domains with hardly any work, the sun is looking extra brighter today.

Zero chance of that. Again, this was covered at great length numerous times. Basically they'd be at the back of a long queue, behind existing domain owners, trademark owners, etc. and so they won't have even a glimmer of hope of getting a decent domain out of it.

Frankly, I see little benefit in rehashing a discussion that was done to death - and then some - first time around. If (and I still think it's "if" not "when") a new direct.uk proposal emerges from Nominet towers, it will be time to dissect it again and see exactly what the repercussions might be, but that needs to be done based on SPECIFICS not on abstract speculation.

I will be happy to take my place in a lot of queues.

Not every TM holder or .co.uk registrant is going to neccersarily want, or indeed afford, to re-reg every .uk domain (assuming they are not given free) and when they dont, there will be people like me ready to hoover them up. I cannot see that this is a bad thing for those of us who forgo a large portfolio in exchange for paying off mortgages and the like by liquidating our stock.

The other way around I would say, 5% of Acorners that have no investment in .co.uk may get a few .uk crumbs and be wishful at scoring big. They will have to pay through the nose at auction.

Dream on.

The message will have to go out to current registrants regarding .uk, and given the supposed stance of Nominet regarding use of personal data, the only way to maximise profits is for them or the large registrars to find a way of getting around this.

There will be opportunities a plenty for anyone with half a brain, Those that think there wont are either in denial or there vested interest is blinding them , Everyone will be regging them unlike other cctlds that have been marketed as competition or alternatives for tld,s its a sure fire money pit to swim in?

Example ?

I'm going to bite. Possibly for the last time.

Let me put it to you this way. If you have a portfolio of 3000 domains and Nom give you the opportunity to purchase the .uk equivalent of your names for a special one off deal of £3 a name, will you or will you not pay £9'000 to reg them?

Yes? - Well done.

No? - I will welcome some of your names into the stable of lee.

Its all ifs and buts at the moment but Nominet are not in the habit of giving things away for free, so the simple fact is, if .uk goes ahead then the .co.uk owners are either going to have dig deep or let go.

The answer to your example for all quality domain owners will be YES, they would have to bite the bullet.

You are dreaming, the only winners, if it ever happens, are Nominet.
And as it will devalue your current portfolio I suggest you have a good think about it.

My portfolio stands at roughly 18 names.

I have nothing to lose from .uk coming becoming a reality. :D
