ICANN have agreed this now..

http://mydotlondon.com/

BoJo's all over it saying it'll be a huge boost to London etc...

I've said it before on here - I think the market is changing big time and traditional extensions are becoming less important as these new more specific ones are released.

What does everyone think?

This is what concerns me most regarding the uk situation.
Once you lose momentum it can be hard to regain.

I agree - and companies like 1&1 have been spending money on prime time TV advertising. Normal people are going to be very attracted to these sorts of names especially when they have been frustrated by domainers hording the .com or .co.uk equivalents in the past.

I think if you look at the method of supply of some of these domains though you might be surprised particularly on the subject of hoarding.
The registrars are asking the public to register their requirement prior to release, then after release they will decide who gets the domain. Though how that will work is yet to be seen.

Your may well be right on some of these but the list of extensions is so vast that I am sure most businesses would be able to find something suitable.

Just wondering though if most of them will go the way of info and biz
and the more confusion so the better it is for a strong brand, I think that is why .com has held up pricewise more than any other extension.
Also people want .com so not to restrict their market, extensions like London are going to regionalise your market.
I know the logic some attach to specifics and that if someone is looking for somewhere in London then that's the extension to have, but apart from the purest, such as hotel dot London etc, I don't see it working that well.

Registrars will push them as its virgin ground. Money in the bank.

I think geographic TLDs will do well, e.g. .NYC, .London, .Berlin

I also think a .London would increase value of equivalent .co.uk though.

While I agree new TLDs like .camera and .money might be cool, the fact that there's 500+ new generics to come onto the market makes it hard to remember them all.

Didn't a bunch come onboard a few years back - .aero , .travel etc...

If you look at GoDaddy you have more extensions now to choose from (global grant you) but everyone ignores. I remember ad campaigns for them too.

Agree though if this doesn't change the outlook of domains as an industry, something will come along soon and flip it on its head

I got loads of .me, .tel, .co and .tv including my firstname and surname in most of them, I've dropped all but 2 of them, I think I own now 3 .me, 1 .tel, 0 .do, 2 .tv this is from an average of 15 each.

I think only service.london will be of value garage.london, printers.london etc, and I think it will take some time before people see "printers.london" on a business card and realise its a domain name, I know older people 40+ in generall won't have a dickie bird.

I bought my mums name .co, and she just couldn't get that it was .co and half the time gave the address as .co.com and other times .co.uk, so trying to expalin is just .london won't be worth my effort heh.

Maybe in some years once people realise you can use .london .manchester .blah it may work but I can't help but feel these names won't work well in print.

The main thing it has going for it is that it's promoted by the Lord Mayor's office, therefore unlimited promotional means .

I had a guy text his email address to me. It went like this: send an email to @blahblah.co

I was about to call and ask if he meant .co.uk or .com when I got a follow up text saying:

not @blahblah.com, not @blahblah.co.uk but @blahblah.co

Imagine having to do that every time you give your email address out

http://www.londonandpartners.com/me...31115-new-london-web-domain-gets-the-go-ahead

Reading from the above link, of course if the Lord Mayor phones Selfridges and asks them if they want to buy a domain name, they will.
Logically though Selfridges is a brand and owns the. info .com .co.uk .tv and this is just another extension that they will register.
Will this extension gain enough traction to compete with co.uk ? a resounding no.
It's an also rather than an alternative.

For me though the internet is the world wide web and we are continually being corralled into places companies want us to go. I think these extensions could encourage the use of the address bar so that you do go to your intended destination . So if I want a lawyer in New York I would like to get one by typing Lawyer.nyc and so getting a lawyer in New York. The only problem is that someone will get that domain and it won't be a lawyer in New York.

The world wide web is not evolving in the interests of the consumer, it's a cash cow for companies.
A bit like the pensions industry, it makes money for everyone except the investor.

The front page of the evening standard was 'we've got a dot' or something similar...

Most of the people in London will know about it now..

There will be no confusion with a .london domain - like there is with .co vs .com vs .co.uk

Registrars will be milking them to the hilt? I suspect the next biggest culprit will be some less than scrupulous web designers who rather than saying you need x name it will cost x as this will likely leave peanuts over for design they'll convince the client to use .whatever at reg fee... By the time clients realise there crap who knows maybe enough have been sold all putting adverts in other media promoting there new sites to actual make them the go to thing in "g" eyes ???? I'd suspect not though lol

ICANN meeting London June 2014

.London are apparently sponsoring the first ever ICANN meeting to be held in the UK in June 2014.

It has only just been officially announced .London will be released in the spring of 2014.

I think there will be.

They just seem incomplete, like subdomains missing their extensions.

I preregistered interest in murray.blog, not adding a com or co.uk on the end seems totally foreign.

this critical time

The more I have read of the energy and focus on .London the more Nominet's handling of .uk I see as very poor.

We have posted around 10 mainstream press stories on the .London

Nominet starting off with .uk is all about demand for more capacity, improving the digital UK economy and a desire for more UK security in V1.

Then flawed thinking by Nominet on V2 which did not reflect V1 feedback and an agenda which is changed to be all about the new GLTDS which were not raised by Nominet during V1.

Nominet currently not stating what they intend to do about .uk, just adding to the uncertainty and lack of direction of the UK namespace at this critical time.

What a difference if Nominet would have started a debate about the new GTLD's and got a consensus of what should be done in the UK namespace, if only....

The fact that Google no longer offers an exact match domain boost is likely to mean there isn't much point for web developers and affiliates registering keyphrase domains is this extension. That will affect the popularity of the extension.

So far, most new domain extensions have failed and only made the .com (and to lesser extent .co.uk) more desirable.

Rgds

I disagree, its a whole new type of confusion.

While it won't be confused for being another ext, it will be missed as even being a web address at all, on the search results and in hyperlinks it may be fine but confusion in print will be epic.
