Here's a list of popular .org.uk sites and whether they will get the .uk of their name (as they have the .co.uk too). I think charities should get together and collectively agree to stay on .org.uk (redirecting from .uk if they are due to get it) as having some of them change and others not able to will be very confusing.

Nominet YES
Tate Gallery NO
National Trust YES
British Film Institute NO
Royal Horticultural Scoiety YES
Macmillan Cancer Care NO
Oxfam YES
National Union of Students NO
Ofcom YES
AgeUK YES (although it'll be AgeUK.UK)
English Heritage NO
RSPB YES
RSPCA YES
Alzheimers Scoiety YES
British Heart Foundation NO
Shelter NO
Law Society NO
Federation of Small Businesses YES
Labour Party NO
Mind (Mental Health Charity) NO
Diabetes UK NO
Amnesty International NO
ACAS Yes
MS Society NO

Heck, maybe the Nominet trust should pay for some advertising to promote this.

What do you think should happen with established charity/non-profit sites? Should they stay on .org.uk or change to .uk?

They should stay on .org.uk, much like government should ALL be on .gov.uk, I'll be rogered silly if I'm going to trust a .co.uk government website. Well no more than I trust wikipedia anyway ;)

No disadvantage pointing the corresponding .co.uk and uk to the .org.uk!

Nominet.org.uk v Nominet.uk?

I feel .org.uk have a real place in the UK namespace for their indented purpose of 'not for profit' and charity organizations.

Nominet.org.uk should take the lead and state they are going to stay as Nominet.org.uk rather than move to Nominet.uk.

Supporting in a positive way .org.uk and what it stands for.

Too late for that. Nominet were and still are happy to take the money and let you slap anything on it.

.

Not really, if they can plan to change the rules to stop you registering porn/sex/whatever names, why can't they say from this day forward .org.uk is for this use ?

They could never realistically do that as they had no restrictions on them to start with. Some people have 6 figures invested into single .org.UK domains.... Its beyond comprehension to now say we've changed our minds, you need to close those sites down.

I'm not talking about a retroactive change, as I assume their porn/drug/etc stance wouldn't be retroactive either.

More a from this point forward any new names, and they would have to wait for current names to be dropped and die out.

How are they going to enact this insane idea to stop adult names ? People have equal money invested in those ?

It seems ridiculous to meddle in things that are perfectly legal. If you don't want to see porn or drug content, don't visit those URLs. Its not being forced on anyone so I really don't see the issue.

OK, where is the real Monkey with the controversial views ;)

Nominet appear to be, being pressured by MPs, I could register sweetlittlepuppydogswithwetnoses.co.uk and put porn on it, how is stopping me registering an offensive name which people instantly highlight as porn going to help ?

That's what they did with me.uk domains, except they don't actively enforce the rules. ie. A company can still register a me.uk domain and as far as I know Nominet will only take action if they are asked to do so.

Well my view is you're a knob.but that isnt controversial as 99% of acorners agree with me. And the other 1% was tictak, and his care in the community worker wasn't there to help him read this big words.

You know people I think are not worth my time, I add to the ignore list. I know you love that button, so it's ok I know you like me really... deep down.

Oh by the way, I think 99% of Acorn members would disagree with you. Hell, even if you said water was wet, sky is blue or fire is hot, they would disagree with you.

Cool. Have you got anything sensible to say?

It is problem, I wish Nominet would change the rules, so people don't break them, in proper cases of domain / trade name protection at least.

Why not make a complaint for a breach of "9. Specific rules for the .me.uk SLD" that can be found on here? That might encourage Nominet to take a look at this.

I have previously mentioned to Nominet that they should take a look at this area and have pointed out to them the anomaly of their own domain.

Not looking to just to change the Nominet domain but point out others have same problem in protecting domains, so change the rules for all.

Did you get much response other than a smile and perhaps a "we will look into it"?

I thought you were out to specifically embaress Nominet and were going to be calling for resignations! ;) :) (joke!) Seriously, I agree with you and the exercise should be for all. However if Nominet are setting a bad example then why should anyone else take any notice either? :)

remain relevant and to improve

I have been told to pass it to policy, they have never responded to several emails about suggested changes I have suggested to improve the UK namespace. So have not followed up.

Sadly there was no "Nominet policy meeting this year" to attend.

Lately I do believe the policy department has been genuinely stretched with the several consultations it has been running, so no progress on any other ideas.

If things are getting back to there normal workload hopefully we will see Nominet engage with the stakeholders in looking ways for UK to remain relevant and to improve.

If only you know what I know!

Seriously, if the .uk was introduced as V2 and the feedback did not support it, then I would have taken action to stop it, but that would have been my focus not getting rid of the board or embarrass anybody at Nominet.

As it is now, I don't have to spend the time and money fighting .uk implementation and I can get back to my businesses.

BUT still no UK domain sales since the announcement!
UPDATE : Just sold a 2 word .co.uk domain reg 2006 for £500 on Sedo.co.uk (5 minutes after made post) - maybe I will be able to have a Christmas, good luck with your domain sales.
