Detagging a domain via Web Domain Manager?

I want to detag a domain after the buyer has failed to provide a new registrar tag.

I used to be able to do this via the "release" page, but it appears that this is no longer an option.

I assume I just release it to Nominet's tag "NOMINET", is that correct?

Detagged

You can still detag domain name using the Web Domain Manager, you need to select the domain name,
click on release and enter DETAGGED into the box for the registrar you want to release your domain name to.

I send Nominet an email a few days ago, suggesting they have DATAGGED as an auto complete entry
as they do for real Registrar TAGS, so interface may improve or they may add a text note for detagging instructions on the page.

I find this one of the most annoying things of selling, when the new owner changes all details but the registrar and then never reply again. As self-managed tags, we can't hold third party names indefinitely, so having this option is great providing you've given them sufficient notice.

I suppose if you are transferring via the email method (£12), then you could always change the tag first to this, then there wouldn't be any follow up required.

Why not mark it no longer required instead of detagging? That way your registrar account can't be invoiced for anything further but you won't cost the Registrant a Nominet fee to retag it to a registrar in the future. If you detag a domain name the domain name is removed from the zone file.

You can have a small number and if you're self managed you obviously have the facility to conduct free transfers so could request their preferred registrar tag as a precursor to doing that. Otherwise you could simply specify YOUR preferred default outbound registrar if the new registrant refuses to specify one.

Nominet don't like detagging because it causes problems for the registrant. Mark as no longer required and optionally remove name servers if you want to prevent use of the domain name until registrant specifies a new tag.

Nominet could also request during the transfer process that they select their registrar. That way, it is less likely the new owner will type in the sellers tag. Much better solution than a simple "do you want to change the registrar" because some I assume don't understand this part and therefore ignore it.

I think that's up for review sometime this year. I don't consider detagging as the best way to encourage a retag. Remove the NS or change them to a web page requesting the customer contacts to make changes to their domain name. Alternatively inform the customer that you're detagging the name to X registrar if they don't specify Y registrar within Z time.

I know this, you can have 10 third party names, but then you have to add to the system and if they then change the registrant name afterwards etc etc, just a bit messy for what it is.

Would they know what to pick if you gave them a list of registrar tags that probably mean nothing? Better send them a list of registrars and that's already published elsewhere. However it's never going to be mandatory to change tags.

I always ask them to retag but I also always suggest a registrar up front so that they have the choice (usually DomainMonster - tag 'MONSTER' because I found their "transfer in" explanatory page is pretty clear.)

Only about 1 in 20 buyers fails to either choose a tag or change to the tag I suggest to them, and after a few emails back and forth we can get things sorted out (one tactic I use to try and get them to act is to point out that they won't be able to do anything at all with the domain they've bought unless they retag it, because we "can't" change the NS for them).

Does anyone know if there's a different tag other than DETAGGED (which no longer exists) that could be used for domains that are absolutely categorically not needed any more. They're already marked "no longer required" but I don't want to get any more emails about them at all. Do you know if "NOMINET" would work, for instance?
