I think the point was that 4x4 sold for £38k a couple of years ago so someone has lost more than a few quid on this particular journey - this seems to have been a pretty spectacular car crash...

I didn't know that 4x4 sold for £38k a couple of years ago. Nevertheless £24k is still a very good price and I still think it reflects well on the .uk market that this domain has been sold twice for very decent prices.

Agreed, I think the 2008 buyer was unlucky that they bought at the height of the UK's love affair with 4x4s; 'Chelsea Tractor' sales went into decline just a few months later.

However after this year's snow I would expect a rebound in 4x4 interest this autumn so could turn out to be a good buy for someone.

Indeed, I just bought an older 4x4 this week as a second vehicle as the prices head upwards in the autumn, well maintained 4x4's do tend to hold their prices well, good sized aftermarket for spares/upgrades as well.

I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand, £24k is a decent chunk of change (when seen in the abstract). On the other hand, you could argue that there's not a lot of art in selling something at 40% less than you bought it for...

Put it another way, if we were talking about a real-world property that had dropped in value from £38k to £24k in a few years, it's inconceivable that anyone would have anything positive to say about the transaction!

The unknown is how much income (if any) the previous owner realised over the last two years.

For all we know he may have made back his £38k investment in the first year and be perfectly happy selling at £24k knowing that the 4x4 market has declined? Does anyone know if there was a site on the domain?

Yes I agree it depends on your starting point. Someone selling Barclays shares today (at 325p) might feel a bit a aggrieved if they purchased them two years ago for twice that amount. However someone else might be over the moon if they purchased them a year ago for 150p. If the sellers wanted to put the £24k into bank shares they'll get far more shares than they would have got 2 years ago and if they had invested their money in Northern Rock they'd have lost the lot!

Same here, seriously thinking of getting a 4x4 for later in the year in case we get more bad weather.

The Lexus RX450 would look rather nice parked next to my LS460 but not sure I can justify the price for something that may only get used a few times a year.

4x4.com was a site similar to offroad.com,vids etc, good site, 4x4.co.uk and 4x4.com was owned by same, think the owner was in switzerland

GKT indicates that the search level for 4X4 has been pretty consistent since 2004...with a big spike in Jan2010.

I didn't think that the GKT cpc was that high for 4x4, but it depends what you want to do with the site.

It will be interesting to see what the new owner does with it.

This shows that prime domain names are still being traded until they find their 'final home'. If this arb4x4 company stays in business (which I am sure it will) then the domain 4x4.co.uk won't be up for sale ever again effectively.
