On Alexa it says one of my domains has traffic rating of 5,307,892
What exactly does that mean ?. Someone must know, lol

Thanks
DG

Alexa works out traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users. If you have thier toolbar installed, it logs the sites you visit, this is why some SpyBot applications consider it Spyware.

The traffic rankings are shown in the Alexa service with the LOWER the number the better you are doing. It uses reach to measure the number of users and Page views measure the number of pages viewed by Alexa Toolbar users.

This is the basis for their calculations. It tracks your postiion over time so that you can see if you are going up or down:

Traffic Rank for acorndomains.co.uk: 159,623
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?q=&url=www.acorndomains.co.uk

We have increased 1,100% in the past 3 months! :)

To be honest a score in the millions isn't worth much but it is better than no score at all.

Lol, I well and truly mis intepreted that !. I actually thought it was
the higher the score the better. Oh well back to the drawing board.

Thanks
DG

Does it follow that a name like mani.co.uk (Alexa rank 29,433 and 182 links) has some inherent value?

At what point/ranking do names become interesting because of their popularity?

182 links would certainly be worth regging. Any Alexa score is some indication of interest in the name but under a million would be even more so.

Found an available .co.uk with Alexa rank 13,597, and 1 link.

I think a few US companies use the name, but any traffic will be for an ISP.

I don't want the domain but I will give it to a regular forum contributor.

late night reading

Alexa is pretty useless, storebuilder gave a good reply here

On the example Mani.co.uk the actual domain Alexa is looking at is giorgioarmani.com and the link pop is also for giorgioarmani.com, mani.co.uk's linkpop across multiple search engines is 0 (www.marketleap.com)

A good read
here

or for those who don't want to sign up,

some guy from webmasterworld said:
In regard to the accuracy of their ranking system, don't depend on it. It's useless, unless Korean surfing habits are your concern.

According to the posted link to alexa's disclaimer, if anybody bothers to read it, you will see that only IE users are counted; that AOL users are not counted, and that the majority of their users are Korean.

To put it frankly, the alexa toolbar is junk.

I'd stick to OV w/Ext and marketleap linkpop for estimating potential traffic

Darren.

Thanks for that dp.

I am not a traffic hunter, as yet, but it's useful to know how to view the potential in particular domains, and to avoid misleading indicators.
