We know that if your site is listed in first ranking, it also has many disadvantages. Your site might be prone to duplicate content since more people could copy your site's content. Or other competitors might analyze your site.

Whatever the reasons, I think to achieve the highest ranking is every site's goal.
Because a site may get the highest chances or possibilty to be clicked and visited by potential customers.

So what's your views about this.

I personally think being number 1 in any search engine far outweighs not being there. Even if people are copying your content, at least it means you have something worth copying! (Remember, even intellectual property is subject to copyright laws - if someone is blatantly ripping you off CHASE IT UP)
Im sure anybody who is number one will tell you the same. Even being on page 10 or more, for a decent search term, will get traffic. (Example; I know someone who is page 30 for a very searchable term who gets 20/30 uniques a month through the search engine), so imagine what traffic page 1 brings. It can make a real difference to ANY type of business.

Strive to get to number 1, your website deserves no less!

being number 1 is everyones goal always get people copying your link sources, content even taking images. One time when used to buy more links on other sites i would know that within a week there would be 10 competitiors there on te site i had chosen, so......

what i did was "dear site owner i want to buy a link on your site but know that you will probably get 10 offers like mine within a week of posting. So if you put my link up for (x amount) and you then get to charge 5 or more of my competition the same fee as me, i want my link money to be returned. I will name the sites that will contact you."

Anyway, ended up getting 90% of my links free doing that and all the competitiors who copied my links paid ££££ a month on the same sites.

Then people stole content so had to chase that up all the time.

Then they stole images by directly linking to our servers, so we used to change the filename on the server and put the image of a fat naked man etc etc so this would show up on their homepage if they stole our stuff.

We got reported to google on a daily basis too for no reason.

All fun and games but all said number 1 £ far outways the pitfalls of it so its a no brainer IMO just be ready to go on the radar and make sure you can withstand that in GOOGLE's eyes.

Classic!

As long as I'm on top it's fine with me.. Most of my traffic is coming from SERP, I'm not even in #1 position yet..

Its being out there on the top that matters at the end.Having your content plagarised can be dealt later.

Don't know if any of you guys saw the old aol numbers. No 1 gets around 40% of natural clicks, number 2 approx 3.5 times less and at position 10 they get around 2-3%.

I know where I'd rather be.

We write website for customers - and those customers value their no 1 postition!! One - a carpenter - was getting an enquiry a day from being no 1 for "carpenter colchester" and a few other localised search terms.

I have #1 and #2 positions for a number of my keyphrases. Sometimes it even comes up with Sitelinks... But, here is the surprise, whether we are #1 and #2 or #2 and #3 or site links there isn;t a great deal of difference with traffic, it's just around the same.

Most keyphrases picked up substantial traffic when reaching #5.

Also it is better to be #11 or #12 than #9 or #10 - according to my own stats.

Being #1 is great - if someone copies your content don#t think Google does not know who's page it indexed first!

Thats funny I noticed the traffic jump tremendously just going fro #3 to #1 - it increased by around 150%, eg 100 to 250.

Here's the AOL data for organic clicks. It reckons on average a site at 2 will get 3.5x less traffic than the number 1 spot. Obviously this isn't so straigtforward with google slamming advertising, shopping links, local links and possibly maps on the search results with you.

2. 3.5x less
3. 4.9x less
4. 6.9x less
5. 8.5x less
6. 10.4x less
7. 12.3x less
8. 14.0x less
9. 14.8x less
10. 14.1x less

Duplicate content only hurts you if you copied it from another site. if you are the origional weiter of the content then you will not see any negative effects from duplicate content

Being number 1 is like achieving something unique but defending that position is the most important thing that needs to be ensured at any cost.
