Ok here's the plan!

I am about to launch a site called GetQuotes.co.uk

Its home page will have 16 buttons & descriptions for Loan quotes, mobile phones, mortgages, holidays, insurance, electrical goods, games & consoles etc etc etc you get the idea!

Each of the 16 buttons will then link to a page with that subjects service providers adverts on

We get paid affiliate money when the visitor clicks the link or completes a sale as a result of clicking through from GetQuotes to them...

I am about to have the site built by a friend who does it for a living but he is very busy and said SEO isn't that hard its just time consuming

Can anyone please give me a run-down on how it works and how to make my site 'right' from the begining

ANY Good Advice Much appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance

Matt

Some good advice thanks :)

So far from my investigations I have the following....

lots of link exchanges
plenty of text on each page with the keywords in,
lots of alt tags on images with hidden text
Clean Code
meta tags at the top
keywords in the page titles

Anything missed off the list???

yes, SEO friendly URLS.

This site has them, using a code modification.

It allows the SE to have some idea what the individual pages are about, rather than just the homepage.

Make your meta tags etc specific to the subject of each page too. Some web design packages allow you to set this for the home page and then apply the same thing to every page of the site.

Example SEO freindly URL:
http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/namedrive.html

Now type "namedrive" into Google.....and look for this page.

Content.
Lots of original content.
Fresh content.
Content that is highly relevent to, and uses in key places such as titles and link text, currently popular relevant search phrases.
Authoritative content.

Content which makes your site the best (current and comprehensive) resource on the internet.
Content which makes yours the most relevant and useful site that the user entering the search terms you are targeting could hope to be directed to by the search engines.

SEO can be approached by either hard work, or (more difficult) technical means, or a combination of the two.

be realistic about your keywords! don't expect to get instant google serps for "insurance quotes" (comp 69.5 million) water them down for more niche phrases "young drivers insurance quote" (comp 6.8 million) etc...

optimise for 1 or 2 phrases per page... getting found for 25 phrases on your homepage just isn't going to happen!

consider buying a decent link on a high page ranked directory (yahoo, msn, etc.. ) stay away from cheap pr links on ebay! quality inbound links help a lot!

don't expect overnight success... your up against some tough competition.. keep working at it.. (spend an hour a day marketing your site & building links)
take a few risks... the common sense whitehat stuff (title tags, keyworded file names, keywords in links.. etc etc...) just isn't enough anymore... search a few blackhat forums...

until your organic search results kick in... consider contextual advertising or buying a few traffic domains on here.....

oh... if you decide to buy any seo services...
beware of anyone guaranteeing page 1 google results!
beware of any UK seo company....they usually only do the basics + submissions... at least the ones I've worked for anyway ;)

Well the advice on here is outstanding but all a bit above my head!!!

Any real SEO experts on here fancy joining forces? Help with the SEO in return for a %age of the revenue, could be more than one person we could have a team, combining thoughts and ideas, all with a monetary stake in making GetQuotes work...???

Anyone up for a challenge?! :)

What do you intend your keywords/phrases to be? I have taken a few sites to the top of serach engines (MSN, Hotbot, Lycos). ie estate agent northern ireland (www.estate-agent-northern-ireland.org.uk).

Search Engine Optimization is pretty difficult, ask your friend to optimize the website and make it search engine friendly.

your website would be listed on search engine anyway but not on first page top 10 or get high rank if not optimized.

All these elements can have a POSITIVE effect on the way google ranks sites based on ON-SITE SEO:

1. Keyword in URL
2. Keyword in domain name
3. Keyword in title tag
4. Keyword in description meta tag
5. Keyword in keyword metatag
6. Keyword density in body text
7. Individual keyword density
8. Keyword in H1, H2 and H3
9. Keyword font size
10. Keyword proximity (for 2+ keywords)
11. Keyword phrase order
12. Keyword prominence (how early in page/tag)
13. Keyword in alt text
14. Keyword in links to site pages (anchor text)
15. External links To internal pages- keywords?
16. All internal links valid?
17. Efficient - tree-like structure
18. Intra-site linking
19. Links To external pages (good neighbourhoods)
20. Outgoing link Anchor Text (on topic)
21. Less than 100 links out total
22. Domain Name Class
23. File Size
24. Hyphens in URL
25. Freshness of Pages
26. New pages - Ratio of old pages to new pages
27. Frequency of Updates
28. Page Theming
29. Keyword stemming
30. URL length
31. Site Size
32. Site Age
33. Age of page vs. age of site

I have a list of useful tools here that migth be useful too:

List of useful SEO tools, search engine tips and links

Sorry mate, time is something of a luxury at the moment, besides, i'm not an seo expert. I know a fair amount, but i don't think anyone can claim to be an expert as it is such a moving target...
