Hi Guys,

Newbie here!

cris.ps (or www.cris.ps)

I know it's not a UK domain per sé but crisps is a very british interest! Has anyone any idea what this might sell for and could you advise me of best practice to sell??

cheers
Pete

There are some domainers that specialise in clever use of the extension like this. Can't give you their sites off hand, but I suggest you try tracking their sites down and you'll get a better idea of domain value.

You don't see this type of name that often here at Acorn.

Rgds

Thanks :)

Any idea who these domainers are? I'm struggling! I dont' really want to pay 20% commission to someone! Is it ok to mark this for sale on this forum? or is it .uk's only?

Sorry, I just remember once seeing a domainer's site full of names like this, but can't find or recall it.

There is an "Other Domains" section for non-UK extensions. You might need a few more posts to your user Id before you can advertise a domain for sale, that's all. I'm sure a mod can clarify.

As a general rule to anybody new to domaining. You really should avoid this type of registration. There are extensions now for every Country on the globe and it is far to easy to think you've created something clever - when in fact it's worthless.

If you insist on building a CCTLD into a domain, then pick a short, popular, NATIVE word in the appropriate language for the Country code. Obviously this is not possible with the UK extension with it's second level.

Avoid trying to be clever - It dosen't work.

I would be amazed if the domain cris.ps got any bids above $10-$20 where ever you choose to list it - Sorry

I like the name but I don't think it's worth much really. It's catchy and easy to remember though. Not sure what you would do with it... maybe something like a bookmark site where each page you add to it is called a 'crisp' and you organise your crisps into 'bags of crisps' (folders). You could then 'offer someone a crisp' when you send them a link to something you like.

And In the mean-time we will avoid the 10-20 reasons it's an absolute Stinker.

Well that's my fire well and truly pee'd on! :(

My thought was that a crisp company could use it as a page to re-direct to their homepage. (plus a customer service email of [email protected] for example).

Looking at this it's probably best I approach them directly!

Thanks for your feedback guys. I'll go back to the drawing board!

Sorry Pete, It's better that realistic and honest opnions get out as early as poss if your new to the domain game. There are quite a few sites out there that will tell you how wonderful the domain could/may/should be, thankfully Acorn isn't one of them.

I'd be over the moon if you came back and said you'd sold the domain but the truth is it has no commercial value. fanciful does not convert to cash.

If your Ok I'm going to put a piece together in the newcomers section and use one or two examples, including yours just to highlight the pitfalls

Yeah no probs Bailey you're fine to use it as an example.

Maybe along with my thought that I bought it because of it's actual name not because of it 'clickability'/commercial value.

Cheers again - a newbie section on what to look for, how to rate domains (roughly) before you purchase would be most helpful!

Pete

Oh and if you could avoid using my username in the example I'd appreciate it (I know people will be able to find it by whois'ing the domain/looking at this thread - but just for a l'il bit of pride! hehe!)

That's along the lines of what I thought, it would be a nice URL shortening service for Walkers or similar. How feasible it would be that they'd buy it or for a decent amount, I don't know.

Walkers have quite an active twitter account and currently use bit.ly quite regularly. cris.ps could be a nice little bit of promotion for them.

http://twitter.com/#!/walkers_crisps

I think as a customer service email it's terrible but would be great as an url shortener.

As I said - I'd love to be wrong. I consider every new persons success in the domain game as adding little bit more value to everyone else that's already successfully involved.

As for a piece on buying entry level domains - I wish I could mindshare but, the best I can offer is by quoting examples - Good or bad and identifying the good/weak points. I doubt it will be up today

I know them as domain “hacks” Problem is that they can be confusing to consumers, especially when they don’t mention the “dot” in their branding i.e. “crisps” in advertising has people looking or typing in crisps Or the advertising has to be cris “dot” ps There was a sort of flurry on these type of domains with .es

There are quite a few searches for them e.g. http://xona.com/domainhacks/

The companies you’re talking about are all about brand recognition One view is why spending money on an unknown entity may or may not bring in extra £’s..? When they can spend the same £’s on the brand name itself when they no the % of extra revenue it brings (previous market research, campaigns etc) lots are not just one trick ponies in the sense that hey have other products which they promote under the umbrella of the brand which to them makes more sense to promote the brand and its also easy to protect your brand name…

There are thousands of companies out there that buy up domain names purely for short term campaigns. And not necessarily good ones either (make-a-swisssh.com was a terrible idea).

At the end of the day, the kind of person you'd be pitching to is probably someone who's involved in marketing like TV ads/print ads/social media - not someone who spends their time buying up domains. If it strikes them as a good idea, they'll go with it. Their primary interest isn't in the domain as an investment in itself. At the end of the day they've either got the budget and resources (and ideas) for the marketing or they haven't.

Although make a swish is not good in a weird sort of way it would list for the term make a swish…? try it on google wouldn’t be surprised if its no 1 atm… algorithms used would not as far as I’m aware take the cctld as part of a "word" itself into account to make the word it would see "cris" as the term…? I can think of lots of questionable domains names that have been sold to marketing companies etc hacks very very few..? What hacks do you know that have been sold for marketing is it 10, 20, 100......?

Yes it is, my issue with it was that the company owns both make-a-swisssh.com and make-a-swish.com, yet chose to use the former for a TV advertising campaign.

Reminds me of the time I bought

H2o.sc

and tried to sell it to Scotish Water.
One of those 'it seemed like a good idea at the tme' moments

Cost me about a Hundred quid!!!
