Do you use stock photography on your website?

I do on some of my websites but find it can get expensive and I tend to only use it on my more expensive looking websites.

If you want to avoid expensive invoices use licensed images, that's my view

Buy a camera and take the photos yourself. You can spot a stock image a mile away, your own photos give visitors far more confidence in your site.

For once, I can say I practice what I'm preaching, check out my mad photography skillz at 3 Mobile Broadband Review. The photo of the dongle and the box contents are mine. I'm no David Bailey but better than stock IMO.

theres a lot of good free resources
including wikimedia

if i want to use a really good one and use on advertising or a good logo i always pay

istockphoto is good

cheap tbh, when you consider what it costs to go and make the photos or whatever

i just load up about £30 a month in credits and rarely use all of it
good for videos too. short little clips which you can edit and use for minicampaigns
again for sake of a tenner or twenty quid, it would cost loads more to actually make, and TIME
TIME is money

if you're good at photography, donate images to wikipedia and ask for a backlink or credit to your site

bigstockphoto.com - cost a couple of dollars and you can also upload your own and make money when people download them.

I wouldn't go for stock photography since there are lots of free images all over the net. or better yet, I'll just sell my photos or works so I can have an extra income.

I use some of my own pictures and some from Dreamstime - can often find something in the free section.

I second dreamstime.

One of the things I like about dreamstime is they allow you a high res copy of the image and allow you to use the image in your 'production' site for free its only when your site goes live you have to pay.

I find myself using 3-4 images and then realising I've made a poor choice, and then needing to change. With Dreamstime I use the huge water marked image until I'm happy, and then buy whatever I need.

I also sometimes find a stock image I like and I'll go out and shoot it.

Another option is find someone on flickr, message them and ask if in-return for a link back or credit if you can use their image, or offer them a few quid to use it, some of the work is spectacular and looks the shizzle because its custom.

Try 123rf.com - small images are usually £1; larger ones £5.

Stockxpert.com are also good although some images are a bit more expensive.

Microsoft Clipart was free last time I checked.

personally, I find that a good photo in the masthead can make a website.
