Does everyone here use the big services such as snapnames to grab domains or do some of you use software or scripts running on your own servers\PCs?

For .uk it's invariably bespoke software on own servers.

.com etc then the big players e.g pool, snapnames

I'm pretty sure a couple of people here on the forum have UK dropcatching software they will sell you.

You won't get anything that's as good as the best catchers have. So don't expect to get amazing names with someone else's software.

Yeah, there's no software that can beat the big players (Pool, Snap, etc.) but the software could help in grabbing the ones that they end up dropping.

How does the software work? Do a nic.uk offer a API so you can automatically register dropped domains? Or is it done manually? Also is there anywhere that lists domains that are being dropped a few days in advance or is this done by searching nic.uk on wanted names?

If your talking about .uk your mistaken!

Pool, Snap are the worst at catching .uk

unless you have 18 years of zone file changes

the best way to get into "catching" is to try one of the many AD forum members who have been "fishing" for ages.... just click search, next to the new posts tab above and enter "drop catching" or similar words, there are hundreds of posts with lots of very good information that NEEDS reading before you get into the DN catch business...

as far as software goes.... it is only as good as your connection / ip switcher so be careful before you spend any $ on "solutions" ;)

Thanks for the advice mxm. I have decided to have one of the guys from this forum do my catching.

good choice FCP.... regardless of who you use, take time to brush up on the older posts regarding the subject, the posts are second to none and it will save you a lot of time and trouble ;)

good luck and if you get any goodies in your 1st fish let us all know... :D

Not amazing so far but its early days yet.

IP Switcher??? Whats that?

So where is the nom server located? Is it the same IP as www.nominet.org.uk or somewhere else?

This EPP system looks better and much easier to be low latency with HTTP requests rather than SMTP! I'm sure it would be very easy to build something in JSP that will fly on a fast server on a big uplink.

Cheers

Great to see enthusiasm for what is a challenging task!

Here's a good place to start:

http://www.nominet.org.uk/other/dac/faq/

The two servers that will concern you for PGP are:

dac.nic.uk port 2043 for drop polling.
rav.nic.uk port 25 for SMTP dialogue.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! Yes I'm enthusastic... Nothing is ever perfect so I'm sure it can be bettered. I'm guessing latency\hops from server > nom is important. Just done a "trace route" must be on the same optic with 3 hopes and a min of <4ms latancy at this time of the day

Tracing route to nominet.org.uk [213.248.210.6]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms
2 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms
3 2 ms 2 ms 2 ms

Trace complete.

Az: What language are you writing your s\w in?

Cheers

Windows traceroute isn't very good.. those all all rounded. Try Linux.

Dance, I sincerely wish you all the luck in the world with your software, but you'll find truly useful answers are all thin on the ground here as nobody is going to give away their proprietary secrets! What you'll be told here is no more than you can find out with a little cursory searching.

Hello Dale, I hope you`re doing great...I`m starting to get a foot in the .co.uk too

Lasy year on DNF you gave me that LLLL.com checker that was running 12 windows at the same time.

I lost it..... due to a mistake I deleted the folder where it was.

Have you got a copy?

Thanks!

Best regards,

Lorenzo
