They will get that name cancelled for having false details, if they contact Nominet it will be sorted pretty quickly.

Not good though, although I don't think she is going to get that many donations from the public. I don't know why he has to send cheques back either, the domain name makes no difference to the bank account name. Your bank account name can be a million miles away from your url.

One might be suspicious that it is some sort of publicity stunt. It's a sick world we all live in folks and lets face it you are now going to remember the website url aren't you??

The Registant may be given an opportunity to amend their record with the Registry before any cancellation occurs.

Well Nominet can (have done before) declined to give anyone to opportunity to rectify the registration. Unless someone can prove they are Mr / Mrs SGHUK by means of a birth certificate or driving license then Nominet don't have to give a person other than who is on the whois the authority to change the details.

They have done it quite a few times where the registrants name is so bizarre that it can be cancelled.

You don't need to register at companies house though to get a bank account, quite a few charities aren't registered at companies house. Up until a few years ago the RSPCA weren't registered at companies house. They tend to only register at companies house because it gives them protection to sue third parties for libel etc. As the law stands (until recently at least) Charities can't sue for damages.

All he has to do is register with the Charities commission and he'd be fine to open up accounts.

Assuming of course they have written "Amy Winehouse Foundation" on the cheque and not "Amy Winehouse Foundation Ltd"

I've never operated a charity so unfortunately I cannot comment, except to say I suspected he is expecting significant financial interest so might want it through a company. I've not checked with the Charities commision to see if the name has been taken with them. Perhaps it has.

In fact let's all take a massive step back a minute, I think everyone (including myself) may have missed the blinding obvious.

Why doesn't he use amywinehouse.co.uk never mind amywinehousefoundation.co.uk

Looks to me like someone is cybersquatting that. Maybe he can shame the record company into giving him it? I think he would be odds on to win a DRS if he is the main beneficiary of her image rights in her will.

I wonder if them registering it on her behalf is like a web designer registering a name on behalf of a client and actually have very little rights to it even though it is in their name.

That could be an interesting DRS.....

I love it when cybersquatters come out fighting though "McCann, of Uxbridge, West London, said: "I'm not the d***head. The d***head is sitting over there without the name in his possession."

But as there is no charity yet, even though Mitch says there is. Technically (not morally) the guy is right and done nothing wrong as there is no entity set up yet to challenge him.

I agree, technically nothing wrong but morally a whole heap of shit.

That said, Mitch, the father has the press and public on his side and a great portal to the fans. He can use this publicity to ensure fans know what to do with their donations. Use the press to take advantage, get them chasing Martin McCann (Anyone know him)

Papers love this stuff so use them by putting the foundation in the public eye, I am sure Mr McCann is gonna be getting more than hate mail

Domainers getting a bad name again

Just an idea Has the domaining community ever given thought to a self regulated body concerning good domaining practices.

Something like the the Federation of Master Builders or the Guild of Master Craftsmen.

If you sign up to the group you get a little badge to put on your site, so the public is aware you follow some sort of honesty code as set out on a 'Guild of Domainers' website.

Cmon guys, has this been discussed before?

I've seen plenty of threads on this forum acknowledging the lameness of the UK domain industry. Maybe trust is a major issue in this.

I've seen threads saying Nominet do nout in the way of promoting the industry. This could raise awareness that domaining is a real job and not just a bunch of squatting geeks.

Maybe we need some sort of 'code of honour', no trademarks, no profiteering over misery and grief, when dealing with a member of 'the guild' you can expect a certain level of service etc..

If their was an association or guild it still wouldn't prevent the above.

I would see an advantage as it could form a go to point for media response that condones such actions but supports secondary domain market trading.
