Hi everyone,

I have a super premium domain that I am selling and I am trying to familiarize myself with overseas sales. I just found this forum so looking forward to learning a lot about sales in the U.K.

Welcome to the forum. What is this 'super premium domain' you mention? ;)

Welcome to the forum. You will also find domainprices.co.uk helpful.

When I hear super premium I am instantly wary, however in this scenario - you actually do have an exceptional domain. I hope the sale goes well!

As above - The jewellers would be a very very good target for this. Have you made sure its a high profile sale?

Thanks guys. I have just begun the sales process after some amount of due diligence. I spoke to several high profiled brokers but couldn't reach a comfort level with their sales processes. I prefer being fully involved as I am with any other important transactions I am involved with. It is listed on Flippa.com. I chose Flippa for a number of reasons but there are issues which I am attempting to address. One big issue is lack of visibility once the name moves off the home page.

My target market right now is technology (mobile communications, telecommunications, search engines), media, and social web. These companies would probably give me the most upside potential since they have deep pockets. It is a question of identifying the decision makers and contacting them which is what I am involved with right now and one of the reasons I am here checking out the European marketplace.

Thanks everyone for their well wishes in my endeavor.

Nice domain, it needs more publicity than just being on Flippa though.

Give it some exposure, to get the best selling price you need as many people wanting it as possible ;)

Hi,

Yes, Flippa provides limited exposure. However, they are fair and there are a couple of other domains on there right now get some press including ay.com and dirt.com.

The best exposure I received was with the press release on 24-7pressreleases.com. Received over 1500 views which was quite good. I was lucky that they chose the press release to be #5 on their front page that day. I welcome suggestions on ways to promote the sale and appreciate all advice. Thanks for the support and advice.

Whoa! Nice name for an introductory post.

I have a suggestion ... how about you tell your story to dnjournal.com, i.e. your domaining background, and see if you can get a front page story on that site ... it should help the sale.

Great domain! Welcome to the Forum!

I'd echo accelerator's post - definitely get in touch with Ron Jackson at DNJournal.

All the best, Richard

I think it is a great idea. I use to write for many computer journals and I know that magazines are always looking for some newsworthy angle. I am not sure what the angle for this sale would be. There are a number of great domain names on sale right now (I just wrote a post on my blog at links.com of some of the more noteworthy names), so I have to find something unique about what I am doing. It is a great idea though, and I will definitely give it lots of thought.

Another challenge is finding and contacting end user decision makers in a way that does not seem spammy. I am very sensitive to proper protocol when approaching decision makers in large corporations or startups.

Thanks again for the idea and the suggestion.

Hi there and thank you very much for the warm welcome. People on the Continent are quite welcoming! Thanks!

Yes, I agree, DNJournal would be a great placement and I am going to give it lots of thought. I have to approach Ron with some unique aspect of this sale which is newsworthy. Hopefully, I can come up with something that can interest Ron.

Appreciate the support,
Rich

Given the quality of this domain I doubt people would object to being told about the sale. Letters are the least spammy method in my opinion. Seeing that this is a top notch domain, you could produce more of a marketing pack to send to people if you felt so inclined, I would imagine that your costs will be more than covered.

Super idea. Yes, I think I will create a marketing pack and begin developing a target list. From what I've been told, the decision makers are usually in the marketing department for large corporations and the CEO or Sales in medium size organizations or start-ups. Does this sound right? I don't want to spam all of the decision makers in an organization. I hope to be very targeted and professional about the process.

Thanks again for sharing with me your ideas,

Rich

What price tag have you put on it (purely out of interest)?

Well wb, you have asked THE question. Despite the fact that I have done over six months of due diligence prior to putting the name on the market, I am no closer today than I was six months ago in setting an asking price.

The problem is that there is zero transparency in the domain name business so I have no idea what the true comps are at this time. This is very different from the real estate market (at least the way it is practiced here in the States) where every transaction has to be legally reported and true (of course, we have seen over the last few years how even the heavily regulated real estate market can be gamed). Many of the reported transactions are suspect and a good number of the sales are never publicly revealed.

One recent exception was the sale of FB.com by the Farm Bureau to Facebook for $8 million (£5 million). The sale price was discovered because the Farm Bureau had the legal requirement to report the sale of the asset to his shareholders.

Given this dilemma, I have decided at this time to leave the price open to discovery since I am completely in the dark. If you (or anyone else) have any approach that I can use to arriving at a price, I would very much like to hear it. It seems like everyone in the business (including professional brokers) are just pulling a number out of a hat. The numbers that I have heard are all over the place. I do not want to under price the name or over price it. I would most like to get comps that I can use in the same manner as I would price real estate.

Good wind-up - What are you doing with Sex.com ? - apart from still waiting for the next best-offer.

lol. :)

Yes, it is all about finding an interested buyer and then negotiating. I took a look through the Selling section and found lots of great tips. I think Phil put together a nice outline. I saved them all for further reading.
