Due to other dev on caught.co.uk im toying with the idea of setting up renewals for customers. I never bothered before because others charge somthing like 0.9p for a renewal which makes no sense me taking on the additional work for.

The other side is most of my support queries are about TAG changes, so its about reducing my support in that area.

How much realistically will someone pay for a renewal?

I suppose I could offset it by then offering webhosting as the others do to be able to offer cheap renewals. But dont have time for additional things at the moment, so the renewal part would have to be viable on its own.

I'm guessing most domainers will want the domains moving to their usual registrar or their own tag. If you've got joe public booking domains though I'd say around a tenner would be a fair price and not so expensive that they'll want to move away.

Yes, its more about Joe Public as he is the one that has the most confusion with TAG changes and in some ways retaining business rather then just passing it out to a third party.

Yeh, I'd say somewhere around the £10 mark, as most end users don't want to get involved with the hassle of tag changes etc. I can't see that many would want to leave for a £2 a year saving.

I'd be happy to pay up to 6-7 quid. :)

Well thats interesting along with grants, ie sub £10 range. Just browsing the big registrars its hard to find their renewal price as they are not very transparent.

Im thinking a figure that holds up on its own and then the possibility of lowering it if I then added hosting services.

Yes your right Grant an end user may never have more then a handful of domains so £2 extra to them would not warrant the hassle for them.

How frustrating, it's not as if you register catches in your own name first Chris like some others do! On that basis, your 'on trust' method has already done the hard work for them anyway, and saved them a transfer fee. Therefore £10 for renewal is a more than reasonable offering as park of a package.

Thanks Anthony, when I started caught.co.uk it was £30 a transfer even at £10 I still think its inflated. Personally I think it should be free just like TAG changes. I would hate to line Nominets pockets and by me forcing my customers to do that would make me feel a part of that.

I pay £7.90 for 123-Reg and £7.08 for Fasthosts (inc. VAT).

So, if you matched in the middle, say £7.50, inc VAT, I'd personally be happy. :D

Thanks thats a lot more margin than I thought, no idea where I got the 9p from.

Would not hurt having two pricing structures ie £10 for those with less then 10 names and a lower rate for those with more then 10

That's a good idea - sliding scale then.

Oh, and Heart are about £6 ish last time I renewed, not sure exactly though at the mo. :)

Depends who your renewals are aimed at, as those familar with domains will be more savvy with pricing (although if they are they would probably just change the tag). I've seen businesses happily paying over £10/2 years, so around that figure is probably a good level.

Made a mistake with this one, just renewed some tonight with FH, they currently cost £8.28 each, inc VAT, higher than I thought! :)
