Ive noticed hosting down and slow hosting for the last month or so, I hope this gets fixed soon!

Status page is always first port of call for me, and should be updated asap, which it was. Nice to see they reply to the comments too.

Not great anytime but Friday morning I can do without client calls. :(

Just out of interest and honestly who has had a host where at some or any point email or hosting have NOT gone down EVER.

I also notice "99.9% up time" guaranteed from some hosting companies and that is still 9ish hours been down a year.

I am a big fan of Krystal hosting, but I have noticed recently slow loading of sites and or down time, which used to be a real rarity!

Yes I'm also a big fan of Krystal.

I find downtime is normally minimal.

On occasion I have also had a slowdown on some sites but others on different Krystal servers have been fine. Maybe the slowdown has come to a head on this server and caused this issue today.

I must admit first thing I used to do was have a moan on here when I had a problem, not putting them in a good light, but now I contact Tom at Krystal who is always very helpful.

It's a shame but I suppose it is to be expected that you only seem to see posts about when Krystal are down and not when for the most of the time are running properly, or about the excellent customer service.

The figure looks good from a marketing view, however, not many people do the maths and are surprised when there is down time.

The main thing to consider is not the actual down time, but how the company handle it. I'd rather have the occasional well handled outage than a big problem when there is an outage.

On the latest update a new upgraded server is being set up.

"Update 12:24 A new machine has been provisioned, with 32Gigs of RAM and faster CPU’s than Ares had (so an upgrade!) We’re now installing the operating system and following that will re-install the system software. Finally we’ll re-introduce the data from the most recent backup."

Does anyone know how often data is backed up as standard? Just I have some sites I was adding content to yesterday which I dont have backups for...

Hi Guys,

As you have read on our status blog, we've been having some major problems with the Ares server today.

We are currently in the process of moving everything over to a new server.

Normally this would have been resolved much quicker, but originally we were working on fixing the server, as it seemed like a software problem. The machine still isn't showing any hardware errors, but it's not happy at all - and we haven't been able to get the OS booting in a clean state.

The moving of data to the new server started a while ago, but there is still some work left to go, as everything will need to be restored correctly.

We are restoring the most recent backups we have, which are from last night. If you find that there is data you are missing, then we may be able to get newer data from the old server in time.

We are also working on the old server still, so if we can get that fixed before the migration of backups then we will of course bring everything back online ASAP.

We fully understand the inconvenience this is causing many of you, and we do apologise.

Please keep checking the status blog for updates

I look after a site which hasnt had any down time in 6 years since we made a HA setup.
It does cost a significant amount of money though.
3 9s (99.9%) is fairly easy if you maintain a decent system, 4 9s is getting more expensive and 5 9s is very expensive.
Then you can get SLAs where you still get down time but there are penaltys for the host if targets are not met.

But in reality downtime is going to happen. It is how it is handled which matters.

Hi wizard,

Did you e-mail me personally or the support desk? I've not had a second to check my personal e-mails yet!

The server is now up : You can get a status update here

http://krystalstatus.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/ares-down/

E-mail will start filtering in from our mail cluster, so there should be no lost e-mail.

We have HA/Load balanced infrastructure planned for shared services. The setup time/cost and planning for this kind of project are not small, and it's very difficult to keep it simple for the customer.

Thanks to all of you for keeping cool heads in this situation, I fully understand the inconvenience that this will have caused many of you.
