I'm having a weight loss challenge against my brother - biggest percentage lost by the end of January.

I'm going all out for a win - anyone got any tips for drastic blubber loss? Am willing to jepordise my health but will draw the line at amputation.

good old cardio! just go to a park, sprint as fast as you can for one minute, then walk for 30 seconds, then sprint for 30 seconds, walk for one minute, then repeat. Interval training is the best for weightloss!

Try The Atkins Diet, stick to it and you will win, easily.
Mmmm bacon and eggs for breakfast....
Regards
Bruce

I lost a stone and a half in 6-8 weeks last year by cutting calorie intake to around 1,400 per day (1 day up to around 2,000 calories so your body doesn't get too used to the drop too quickly - otherwise you'll diminish the amount you lose).

Limit carb and fat intake and increase protein (will help you keep fuller longer). Boiled eggs are great (although wife was NOT thrilled) so I swapped to a protein shake.

I was able to do some light exercise too.

In four weeks you could shed close to a stone, but will take around 10 days to start seeing results.

Have a read of the weight loss articles from this guy (there are 3 I think)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bendirs/2011/04/at_university_a_girlfriend_tol.html

And then buy the programme he follows.

I have followed it and it works, basically go carb free, visit a gym twice a day (at night and first thing in the morning) and eat 4 meals a day at 9am, 12pm, 3pm and 6pm.

Do a combination of weight training and interval training to maximise the weight loss

Low Carbs, High Protein (Protein is harder to digest so the body works harder and burns more calories)

Eat regular small meals rather than a few large ones during the day, it will keep your body fueled up which in turn will keep the metabolism in first gear.

Add that to some decent cardio work and you should see a big difference. (Skipping is one of the best exercises going, it works more muscles than jogging and can be done almost any where)

Avoid any carbs after 6PM

Good Luck

Thanks guys - I like some of these - always prefered protein to carbs so no hardship there...

I read that Gok Wanka lost about 10 stone in a few months by living off a few spoons of honey a day, I was thinking of going one better, maybe supergluing my lips together?

Deffo don't go in famine mode mate. By not eating your body will slow its metabolism down and hold on to any bits of fat in food when you next eat, because it will store it should you go in famine mode again!

Seriously eat small amounts regular making sure it has very few carbs in. If you drink tea or coffee with sugar cut the sugar out, have low fat milk.

The other thing ;) If you like a beer lol, reduce that too its full of empty calories

How heavy are you ?
How old are you ?

Official weigh is on Wednesday - I'll be north of 17 stone (yeah, I know...a porker) 5 foot ten, stocky build underneath the bark. Should probably be about 12.5 - 13 stone.

Always been prone to putting weight on but I've steadily put on 3 to 4 stone since stopping smoking a few years back.

I'm 43.

Suggys - not so much beer, but partial to a bottle of claret a night - I know that's got to go, top of the list!

Firstly I would let your brother win the sprint and I would tackle the marathon.
Get your mind set right, don't risk any form of injury, slowly slowly catch your monkey. As with most goals it's the mind more than the method that gets you there.

Good Luck!

Definitely interval training as mentioned (X Trainer, Treadmill, running).

Also, do you swim? Swim for 60 mins a day if poss, freestyle is best (e.g. Front Crawl).

Weights too and kettlebells would blast it off.

Oh yes, definitely a protein shake of around 100-200 cals within 30 minutes of weights - builds muscle, promotes fat loss.

Suggy has the best advice:

More meals less Carbs high protein and no alcohol.

Eat your carbs in the morning and reduce the intake in the afternoon. No eating after 6pm, no sugar or fried food.

Exercise - this is where most people fall over, if you want to lose weight follow the above and walk a few k's a day. If you want to win then get swimming every day or get on a rower machine. Most get so tied into training and they hate it and end up giving up so just keep it simple and relaxed.

Good luck

Absolutely, agree with Whibs - if you don't enjoy it, you'll get bored and stop.

5-6 meals (this includes snacks) a day is best - low carbs (cut out the spuds, pasta, bread, etc), no beer/wine.

I eat up to bedtime sometimes when I'm in 'high healthy mode' (LOL), but keep it to fruit, raisins or protein shake etc.

Here are some tips for losing weight.

What's your diet like at the moment?

Do you snack on things? If so, what?

Do you drink much alcohol? (Cut it out!) Do you drink many high sugar soft drinks (cut them out!)

I lost 3 stone going from 14 st 4lbs to 11st 3 between May and August last year.
I think it's about doing what suits you best, but the simple thing is eat less move more.
I started runnning, couldn't run 500 yards to start ,(20 a day smoker), now regulary running between 5k-10k.

I find cutting down the saturated fat helps no end, although it does mean spending ages in supermarkets studying labels :D

I would advise against dieting it just doesn't work, you need a whole lifestyle change, and find something that you like doing, running doesn't work for some,i tried cycling but it was boring, but my mates love it.

Whatever you choose, best of luck, and stick with it.

Oh and another thing if you have a smart phone ,download an app like endomondo or micoach, it is brilliant for tracking progress and really helped me, i would have got bored long before, if i didn't have that/

Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions guys!

I've never been able to run any distance, even when I was slim and toned...could never get my breathing right.

As many of you have said, I need to enjoy whatever exercise I do otherwise I won't keep it up, so I'm getting a heavy bag to knock the crap out of, and I'll get my rowing machine back.

I should save a couple of hundred a month on vino too!

You could always try the Brum method of losing weight...

How it works is you go to domains event, say London. In walks Brum and starts to tell you how fat you now are!!

I have lost 2 stone since..... Cheers Brum ;)

Cut out the junk totally (cakes, crisps, biscuits) and do regular cardio. You could go the Aktins route, but I personally find it very difficult to cut down on carbs to that extent. Horses for course I suppose.

I think if you eat a healthy diet (fish, chicken, fruit, veg etc) and do cardio 3-4 times a week you'll make very significant progress. You might want to build up the cardio gradually dependiong on how active you've been previous to now. After 2-3 weeks you'll get in the habit of doing it and it'll be much easier. Overdoing it early days might put you off or result in injury.
