My laptop has decided to die on me over the last 48hrs and although I now have an all new signing and dancing machine I have lost my PGP key for Nom.

Will I have to create a new one and liase with Nom to update the one they hold?

You can do this using Online Services, either retrieve your current key or add a new one.

You could also whip out the old h/d and put it in your new pc to retrive all the things you need.. no doubt you had alot more stuff you'd like back.

there used to be an old unix viewer for pgp k1 keys, not too sure if it still works... as aqua says whip it out (the hard drive!) put it in a usb hd enclousure and run the viewer.. cannot remember the coder but it was about 97-98 that it was "withdrawn" from the public... sure it was on Asta about a year ago ;)

I was thinking of doing this but it was full of crap that Id rather not risk jumping across to my virgin clean machine.

Thanks for the info Keys, I think it might be easier for me to just create a new key.

Aqua - Payment coming Tuesday AM.

It wont be easier creating a new key - do as keys says and log into nominet and you can view, download, or add a new one. just download the previous one they have which will be verified.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but surely Nominet only have the public part of the key. It is useless unless you have the private part.

Step 1: Completey remove any trace of your old PGP software. Sounds as though you don't have it anyway.

Step 2: Install you favourite PGP software and generate a new signing key.

Step 3: Add the public key (in ASCII) via your secure control panel.

Step 4: Call Nominet with the new hex fingerprint.

Step 5: Send them a signed test message.

Step 6: Wait until they update keys, generally about 7.00pm each weekday evening.

Or something along the above lines.

When u say your laptop has died? what's wrong? you can stick the hd in a 2.5" case off ebay and retrieve your data assuming the drive hasn't gone completely?

No power light on the Lappy (checked power supply etc) would lead me to think (with my limited knowledge) that the Mother Board has failed.

Whats the best way to get my data of the HD domain dudes?

You can get cheap USB -> IDE adapters (try ebuyer.co.uk) for less than £10. Thses allow you to pull the HDD from your old laptop and plug into another PC as an external drive and you can then pull data from the old disk to your new system.

Places like PC World offer data transfer services as will your local independant PC store or IT consultant (have a few laptops in the queue for new hard disk and will use the external USB process for all of them)

External enclosure. USB 2.0 (best) or FireWire. "of the HD domain"? Not completely with you there but I think you mean get the data from the drive.

It was a typo. I will chastise myself. :) Thanks for the replies, I will have a go at this myself.

With regards to the PGP, I am now running Vista - any recommendations for a free PGP client to use on this flavour of Windows?

TIA

when one of our company laptops goes kaput, I take the 2.5 hd out and stick this in another working one, it boots with generic ms drivers (if the two laptops are different), enough to allow me to transfer data to a memory stick.

That keeps your PGP intact?

Assuming the HDD is readable, then you should be able to recover & backup the PGP personal directory and then restore the files to you newly installed PC.

Once you get the key back, I'd suggest burning an ascii copy to CD and keeping in a safe place.

I have an external enclosure on order that will enable me to get any files that I need to from the old HD

The problem that I now have is PGP - nothing below 9.6 appears to work with Vista. So I am having to try and resurrect my old laptop to use with PGP and also to download lots of crap too.
