I've always wondered whether mini sites were really scalable (my problem is just how to produce enough unique content), then I read this article in Wired.
The Answer Factory: Demand Media and the Fast, Disposable, and Profitable as Hell Media Model | Magazine
They currently produce 4,000 pieces of unique content per day, and are aiming at over 30,000 per day.
Before anyone points it out, I know Demand do not use mini sites for publication, just eHow and YouTube, but the principles are the same, they could publish the content on mini sites.
Just thought it interesting, is all.
