Morning,

I was wondering if anyone could help with a problem I'm having. I'm trying to change the nameservers on a couple of .com domains I have with Namesco. However, I receive the following error in an email -

Dear customer,

There were problems redelegating smerescue.com to the following
nameservers:

ns1.nameserver.net
ns2.nameserver.net

The error message received from the registry/registrar was:

Unknown Error: DOMAINNAME=domainname.com STATUS=REQUEST_REJECTED

You may re-attempt this procedure with different nameservers by logging
into your account at http://admin.names.co.uk

Kind Regards,

Namesco Limited

NB. I've change the nameserver name and domain name in the email above.

Is it anything to do with locks on .com domains, as I changed a .co.uk the other day without a problem on Namesco? I know if it was 123reg, you'd have to unlock, then change, but I don't see that option on Namesco, or Easily.co.uk.

Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Calum.

With .com, .net etc you need to "unlock" the domain name before changing the nameservers.

If there is no option on the control panel just drop them an email.

It might be that the ISP doesn't hold records for those namesevers.

Heart Internet won't let me use "ns1.greywing.co.uk"

Neither did 123-reg, however I emailed them and they added them to their system.

Some ISP's will allow any nameservers, some won't. That could be the problem here.

I phoned them and they said I must have added a space or something. The support guy did it for me .... and it failed again, but only after I was off the phone. He assured me they didn't need unlocked, when I asked him.

I've used the same nameservers for two other domains with Namesco, and they're working fine.

Looks like it's another phone call!

Finally got to the bottom of it. The domain used for the nameserver had to be set up with "glue records".

The validity of a nameserver can be checked at VeriSign Whois Search from VeriSign, Inc.

It's strange that any nameserver can be used of a .co.uk domain, but glue records are required for a new nameserver to be used for Top Level Domain Names.

Every day's a school day!!

If you want to set a domains name servers to name servers based on that domain name you will always need to supply the IP addresses (glue records).

eg..

To set the nameservers for: mydomain.co.uk to...

ns1.mydomain.co.uk
ns2.mydomain.co.uk

...you will also need to provide the IP addresses of the nameservers as they are based on the domain name mydomain.co.uk - usually the general control panel will not allow space for you to enter the IP addresses.

With .UK domains you can often append the IP address to the end of the nameserver name.

With ccTLD domains the ns records need to be created with the IP addresses assigned AND then they need to be added to the registry as valid nameservers before you can apply them to a domain name.

Did this clear anything up? ;)

Cheers!
