Thought you guys might be interested in a new Professional Network:

dock.io (With my URL)

A few of you are already connected to my existing LinkedIn. But I'm curious about this network.

LinkedIn pretty much succumbed to semi spam connection requests from acquaintances of people you met once at a conference, or similar. After a while you realise that your network is full of people you don’t know or can barely remember... How will dock.io be any different?

That is a very good point. I think the different use cases for LinkedIn can ultimately destroy it as a network. For job hunters more connections means they see more jobs in the network and on the other hand people might get many people connected for the wrong reason and prefer more of a protected network where it is only read contacts. I think any new network tries to spread itself like a virus, regardless of the value of the service. People are perhaps likely to jump on this dock.io if they share the benefits and value that is typically privatized.

Sorry for begin such a cynical old git, firstly I don't see its really like linkedin (which is dying anyway). These startups must be ten a penny now, all based on this formula: funky name + nice website + pot boiler content + fake profiles https://dock.io/about (is there anyone on this page that has even been alive long enough to make any money?).
But where is the money here? ..show me the money - I can't see of find anything about this website making $50k a day or even $50 a day?

yet bizarrely all the profiles on the 'about us' page link through to linked In

nowt like promoting a competitor for nowt

Interesting. I'm on the sidelines. I guess curiosity is driving my interest rather then a belief that the "product" is going to change the world. Yes, there is no much cruft out there. Ridiculous ideas looking for easy money.

It's not difficult to build a new Social Network technically, but much harder to get at the value that people seek. LI has become quite spammy, but I still use as a message platform to connect to the long tail of my social graph. But aside from using it to job or people hunt, I'm not sure it represents tremendous value for most people. I notice, that response rates are low, and yes I occasionally approach people about domain names, and have sold a few using LI as the first point of contact. But over the years, the value for me has reduced as (anecdotally) I think the "open" rates are very low. Because I often email real friends/contacts and they don't seem to respond quickly. So I came to the conclusion that people are not spending that much time there, maybe checking once per week or so.

I see the biggest benefit for LI users, as the easy way to apply for jobs (easily). But the "wall" area does seem rather spammy to me. And LI keep sending me notifications to try and get me to upgrade. Which I find rather annoying.

I wonder if Microsoft (owners of LI) will issue a massive writedown as they majorly over estimated the value of the network.
