Having applied for a transfer form from Nominet, they said no and referred me to the downloadable version.
Was the any consultation or notice, that this was their new policy?

I wrote back as follows:

My problem with that is that the form is in a format that can't be edited. So all of the fields have to be filled in by hand. This takes time and doesn't look very professional when presented to the customer.

At least with the domain name printed on it and a Nominet reference number it looked official.

Are you no longer issuing transfer forms?

If so please will you publish the form in a format where it can be filled in and then printed.

Maybe I'm not understanding your grievance but if you get a form from Nominet then surely you still have to fill it in by hand?

I'm also a bit gobsmacked that you seem to be criticising Nominet for offering electronic download when so many people on this forum have been critical of Nominet not offering electronic stuff.

Please clarify your grievance?

I thought I was being very clear.

When you got a form from Nominet you only had to fill in a couple of fields and sign it.
It all looked official, because the domain name and the current registrant were printed on the form. It also had a Nominet reference number.
Now it has to all be filled in by hand, which takes time and looks tacky.

The grievance it that it was done without asking the people who use the forms.

What would really help, is if the form was in a format that could be filled out before printing.

Nominet now saves cost of postage, envelope, printing - plus of course Naomi printing the forms out.

What would be useful is a charge of £35 for those going via the old skool method, and perhaps £25 for those using the digital method ? ;)

Good call, is the transfer now cheaper, seeing as though we are doing most of the legwork?

I welcome the updated transfer process. It is much quicker, particularly for international customers. The additonal ID check and email notification of transfer a request seem to provide adequate security, as long as you ensure that Nominet have up to date contact details.

It would be better for regular sellers if we could include our details in the form instead of having to write them for each transfer.

For Nominet, the saving in paper and postage must be significant but the admin time for each transfer has probably increased.

It would be great if we could go back to free transfers, but that is not going to happen. The majority of transfers are for commercial use and £30 +VAT doesn't buy much these days. If you think the charge is unfair for some buyers then reduce the price accordingly.

To make it very simple.
Please Nominet, can we have a copy of the form, in whatever format it was generated, before it was turned into a pdf file.

Not necessarily. Print out a stack of transfer forms, then when you need them run them back through the printer - hacky but it would work.

Could even be a good way of automating the process from a Unix box, maybe time to read up on lp(1) :)

Horrible. Writting a template for that would be a nightmare.

I have just loaded the form into Adobe Acrobat and the only parts of the form that can't be edited, are the bits that need filling in.

You seem to have some reasonable questions about the downloadable form so the quickest and most effective way of getting some answers to your questions is to email the Director of Operations [email protected] - that way you will get a response from the horse's mouth so to speak.

I bet this has more to do with A4 envelopes from August costing more to send in "size".

Time for a post on Nom-Steer about this ...........

£30 + VAT for DIY is a joke.

How about when registering a domain you would be allowed to put your TAG in the registrant field?

Then if the TAG holder and the registrant were the same, automation would allow you to change the resistrant.

This would be much more secure than the current paperwork and not involve Nominet doing anything, probably in the majority of cases.

There are actually a plenty of tools to make any PDF edible (or editable;)
Not really an issue..

Thanks for elaborating on what those tools might be. :p

Yes I would be interested to know as well please. I like the idea of online transfer forms but not the use of my unreadable handwriting having to be used (I like to type things as people can then read it !)

I still don't think that any PDF editing programs will be able to add text to the areas required, because of the way they are defined.
It would be possible to add text as graphics, on a new layer, using something like Photoshop, but that's almost as bad a using a biro.

I have tried asking through every contact given:
Please can I have a copy of the form in its source format.
It's not that difficult a question.

I'll then re-define the fields, so that it can be edited before printing. It's not rocket science, but it seems to be beyond the wit of Nominet.

I have just downloaded a transfer form. I now see a security problem perhaps. Lets say I have a number of domains, AAAAAAAAA.co.uk and bb.co.uk and clearly bb.co.uk is the best of those names. Lets say someone knows the domains I own and buys AAAAAAAAA.co.uk from me.

What is to stop him downloading the 1st page of transfer form and adding in bb.co.uk and having that transferred to himself rather than AAAAAAAA.co.uk ?. Nothing as far as I can see.

I think they would also have to forge the confirmation letter from you, which would presumably clearly say that you were transferring AAAAAAAA.co.uk only.

I would imagine that Nominet have introduced some extra checks (such as the ID check that was reported on here the other day) to further verify each transfer now that the forms are freely downloadable.
