Looks like WHOIS is down...

> whois -h whois.nic.uk nominet.org.uk
Error for "nominet.org.uk".
There was a problem accessing the database. Please try again.

Same response on their site:

WHOIS

No response from the automaton either.

Did I miss a scheduled maintenance notification?

Someone will be in to feed the hamsters soon :)

Sure enough...

The current response from an external IP is "connection refused", and their site WHOIS tool is responding with "ERROR: failed -- internal error"

It's time for a kip anyway. Hope it comes up quickly for you guys.

Planned Systems Outage - 9 December 2008

At 8.00am on Tuesday 9 December 2008 we will have a systems outage lasting for about 1 hour when we will be deploying software upgrades. During this time Online Service, EPP, whois and DAC will be unavailable. The Automaton will not process email requests, but they will be received and queued for processing when it restarts. All other Nominet systems will continue to work as normal during this period

Heck of a time to have a planned maintenance.

Thanks for the link monaghan. I also wrote and asked how we can be notified by email prior to outages. I will let you all know when I hear back.

Congrats on your first transfers systreg. You're lucky you didn't have to deal with the previous paper trail method!

Cheers, yeah, from what I have read on here and elsewhere, the old paper method was a bit of a nightmare, I much prefer this click, click, click, finish method

I use the RSS feed on that page and subscribe via Outlook 2007 getting the notifications appearing in my mail client (not excactly email, but near enough)

Also routine stuff like this is on the nom-announce list which you can sign up to from the admin pages in your membership section of the Nominet site (assuming you are a member)

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd like to use Outlook but I know someone who recently switched from Eudora, and all sent dates got changed to that day so I can't risk that. Apparently the search function is slower and buggier too.

I've been on the nom-announce list for about a decade but didn't get a notification of this maintenance.

Now that I did get on the nom-announce after the update. They added an Unrenew command and a Renew-not-required command.

Unrenewing a domain hasn't been an issue but it's certainly a welcome addition. All registries should offer the same.
