Frontier Estates paid £11m for the properties at Sandy Lane West which were formerly owned by Royal Mail, Nominet and Prudential and has now launched a £2m refurbishment programme.

Phase one of what will be called East Point Business Park has been completed with phase two ready by May and the site will be completed by January next year once Internet domain name registry Nominet completes its move to the Science Park.

Remind me - how much is New Nominet Towers supposed to cost?

Oxford must be quite a pricey place to operate from. How about moving to a cheaper location?

I'm sure there are cheaper places it could operate from too and it would be interesting to know why Nominet chooses Oxford. It's probably historical and maybe related to the University in some way.

Let's go with the flow and vote to outsource to India.

Reg fees down to £3, free transfers and they will still be making £millions

Good point. The Patent Office and Companies House both moved everything (or almost everything) out of London and are now based in South Wales - where WDA grants abound. However as a private company rolling in cash, Nominet does not have a duty to put lowering its costs base before inconveniencing its staff...

Too late now if they have bought a bespoke building there - but I wonder whether any of the people charged with looking after members/stakeholders interests raised this when the decision was being taken?

Could you imagine the likes of Lesley etc moving to the rolling hills?

I always find it funny that Nominet is near the "Cowley" area of Oxford lol

However it seems Dr Black was from the Chilton and the UK Naming Committee was based in Abingdon (so they have always been in that part of Oxfordshire):

Also.....

I suppose you have to remember for those people that work at Nominet (even down to people like the cleaners) Oxford is where they live.

And we have all experienced first hand what happens when registrars move e.g. 123-reg (Pipex) from Nottingham to Stockley Park.

Bah! 123-Reg staff have it cushy ;) They got consulted and were given notice of the move!

I was wondering about the Nominet cash surplus too. My feeling is that this is due to lack of competition and because Nominet are the "netsol" of the UK domain space. Maybe we should have another TLD registry able to offer co.uk's and provide more competition to Nominet?
