One more time about co.uk, org.uk and me.uk. Let’s do an experiment ;)

First of all I want to say that reading through this forum gave me a lot of info to think about. I am not a domainer, but learning new skills and adding them to my own knowledge is always worth spending time on.

Recently I’ve seen quite a few discussions on extensions and what it worth. In my work main criteria is what could be done with a name or idea. On several occasions I had co.uk Projects that do better than their .com counterparts even on google/com.

Therefore (time permitting!) I want to do an experiment:

Yesterday I got two fresh, never before registered, UK domains:
codecpack/co/uk (60,500 exacts and 135,000 broad)
weddingdresses/me/uk (368,000 exacts and 2,240,000 broad).

I am going to develop them (again, time permitting!) into two sites: first one Adsense and second – Affiliate. Then to promote them absolutely the same way (I have several PR2, PR3, PR4, etc. sites and will put links equally for both domains). The idea is to get them high in SERP regardless of the extensions. All other UK extension I could ignore, as they are undeveloped PR0 sites.

Well, for the Adsence it’s not a problem, I can put a WP blog, links, downloads, etc. With affiliate it’s a bit more difficult for me, because I don’t have a clue about how it works (shame, shame…) but I’ll try to figure something out or might take an expert advice from you, people.

I am not going to use PPC but only quality links and SEO in equal proportion. Let’s see what could be done and is me.uk as worthless, as many people here think.

It has been proven that I suppose Google disregards extensions, so no proof is needed I suppose on that front. But go for it and back it up more!!

People will say .me.uk arn't worthless when turned into a site and generating money and then is worth x times monthly rev.

By themselves, no website, no revenue not many at all are worth more than a reg fee to most people if the word or phrase isn't generic or a product/service keyword.

Go for it and see how they pan out and hope you make a nice bit on both

Google have said they use cctlds for geo positioning, not relevant i know in this case, but thats what they are doing now so logic would say they have the capacity to go more precise if needed

No Agreed. I was just meaning mini sites. But that's just like the .org.uk rule as well then and I understand what you mean but who hasn't a mini site on some .me.uk or .org.uk earning something? Not all I know, but a fair percentage that own .me.uk / .org.uk will be doing.

If you truly wanted compare effect of extension, it would have been better to find a keyphrase that you can reg in both .co.uk and .me.uk.

Affiliate ads are pretty similar to AdSense, just sign-up to the network, obtain your code for either a text link or banner ad and paste it into your page.

I feel "codec pack" is a rather weak domain, Google it and there are only two AdWords ads.

"wedding dresses" is a much stronger domain, approx. 8 AdWords ads in the Google search results.

Just write some good content that matches up with keyword searches (see Google keywords tool), get some good links into the sites, and away you go.

Golddiggerguy: I also think me.uk domains should have same impact on SERP as any other geo domains with UK. But I just want to make sure.

Rob: I would rather use me.uk for business than org. The thing is, regulation is already in place what one can do with .org and if reinforced it would have negative impact. Meanwhile regulation on me.uk is only on the ownership, not usage. So if a CEO owns a domain and uses it for his business – it’s just fine. Special contacts could even be drafted on ownership and company use. Even if regulation changes now, older registrations shouldn’t be affected.

Accelerator: Yes, the main idea was to have same keywords, but where could I find free domains with nice set of searches and all extensions So I decided to give a me.uk run for it’s reg fee entering into very competitive market. Codec pack is not as worthless as one my think, many people who search for codecs are interested in software so with correct articles Adsense might place nice ads. Affiliates – never did it so thanks for the tip, I now have some reading to do here and on the DP.

I rarely see .co.uks and other extensions besides .org and .net on the top though, but I'm sure they are out there.

Not true as above, likewise the extension can alter the CTR as well.

Aside from the Nominet rules issue, I also think it looks a embarrassing for a business to use a .me.uk domain. If you're going to try and project an image of a professional, successful business, having a .me.uk domain is like holding up a sign saying "We're obviously not very successful because we can't afford the .co.uk equivalent". Not to mention the fact that .me.uk domains sound really awkward unless the name is a verb like send.me.uk.

From personal experience I find that .me.uk doesn't rank well, nor does .info, nor do hyphenated .org.uks.

Otherwise .co.uk & .org.uk for uk websites work best I think.

I had good results (global) with .info. Have to try .me.uk yet...
