Proof of ID

Is it absolutely essential to send proof of ID like utility bill to transfer a domain to a new registrant ?. I have never yet done so and never been asked for one by Nominet.

Yes it is

If the name is registered in your name as an individual then you will need to send ID, if it's registered in a business name then headed paper is enough

This is a recent change and is a result of the new system of downloading the transfer forms from the Nominet website.

If you don't want to send the details to the new owner you can send them to nominet or fax them

Not sure, but when requesting a tag change (where the domain is already registered in your name on the whois) a copy of your driving licence,
or similar, is required.

I could see why Nom might want proof of a sellers id. Otherwise open season now that the transfer forms are just printed off their website. One would only need to forge the confirmatory letter, which for an individual 'selling' is written on plain paper. Are you being asked for id?

Confirmatory Letter

If either the Transferor or Transferee is an individual, they must write their confirmatory letter on plain paper and include their home address and the address they provided at the time of registration. They should also provide us with a copy of photographic ID (passport, driving licence) or utility bill addressed to them at their home address.

I spoke to a chap at Nominet in the registrant transfer section last week and he said that you can still transfer individual and/or bulk domains without sending ID proof (just as before), however if Nominet thinks the transfer looks dodgy then they will ask for the ID. But so far I haven't had any problems.

We do more transfers than most, and Nominet are currently asking for proof on each one. I think this is a good policy. This is the latest version of the request,

"In order for me to complete your request I will need some form of
identification from yourself (the registrant) to ensure that I am
accepting the authority of the registrant and that they are aware that
this change is being made. (or) to ensure that the new registrant is
indeed a living person.

The identification will need to be in the form of either a copy of a
utility bill (no older than 6 months) or a copy of a driving licence."

Forgot to add one recently and they wouldn't go ahead without it. Good policy.

In the end I've used a flyer from the utility company asking if I wanted to cap my prices. Still has my name & address and the utlity company info.

Good old Nominet, i spoke to them and they said i had to send it in for ALL transfers. (despite me having done 100's of quick hassle free transfers)

I was told this after i had sent in 10 transfers in one day. So i left it to see how many times i was asked to fax in the id.

I was asked about 30% of the time, sooooo i was told it now manditory, but it was only requested a few times.

The last bill I faxed to Nominet they had problems reading it due to poor fax copy.

They said I could email scan of bill instead which is a lot quicker to deal with especially when you don't have a fax machine.

I was wondering if you could do that, its cost me a fortune this week on colour ink! :???:

nominet will let you send more or less anything in via scan or fax.

the only that that has to be signed is the transfer form, the dont even mind if the confirmation letter is signed (so can you email a word doc in theory)
