Re: PAB Paper on Domaining, dropcatching and the secondary market:

Though I agree with Nominet views on Domaining, Dropcatching and ordinary registrants....

I am concerned by 4.3 Position of registrars acting as "professional" registrants:

Some registrars register domain names solely for their own use. Is there a need to differentiate between types of registrars?
There is a range of policy positions with regards to registrars:
1. Registrars should be restricted from registering a high percentage of domain names for their own use.
2. Registrars who register a high percentage of domain names for their own use should be denoted differently and have a different contract with Nominet.
3. There should be no restrictions on the legal business practices of registrars.

I also notice Nominet doesn't give a view on this one. Does Nominet want domainers as registrars? What would be the "different" contract?

I know this is only a suggestion however if you are one of these registrars then I think you should speak up before tomorrow's meeting.

As a new member (last week), how do I speak up?

My view is that as a holder of a number o domain names, it made sense to become a registrar, and move all the names to my own tag, to ensure that domain names are not transferred away, or allowed to drop "accidently". I am the registrar, and I can manage that process. Much like many of the larger .com holders are becoming regsitrars, for commercial protection.

I don't see how the outcome can morally be anything but 3 - "There should be no restrictions on the legal business practices of registrars"

I mean at the end of the day, if A.N Other decides to use (eg.) 123-reg for all his/her domains, then

They would be "registering a high percentage of domain names for their own use" but wouldn't "have a different contract with Nominet". I don't see how being a Nominet member or not should affect that at all.

Hoey

They cannot police instances of registrars having subsiduary companies that hold the registration of domain names..

Personally I not sure what Nom are getting at by floating this debate. They were happy to accept my Nom Membership with a few words by me on the online application to say that managing domains across multiple public registrars was becoming a headache.

If they came up with idea of saying that you could only have X% of your own names on your own TAG before your lost your registrar discount or something along those lines - there would be a new section on this forum dediacted to TAG holders looking to get other TAG holders to 'look after' part of their own portfolio as an alternative registar ! - not even a sensible subject for debate in my book.
