Has anyone ventured into the direct marketing techniques?

I have all mine logged with sedo but have found it is basically only good for the odd offer of £50 :(

Has anyone had success with emailing companies and suggesting the benefits of multiple related domain names? - is this the best way - in my case this is probably the only way as i wont have time to phone them all?

How do you make yourself sound legitimate instead of some spam email trying to conn them out of money

All of the domains I have ever sold have come either from
a direct approach to a party I think would be interested OR
from an approach when they find I have registered the names.
I have never sold one any other route and find SEDO, ebay etc
a waste of time. You have to think "what use will this domain
be to them" . If say they are a bookshop and you have
"bookshop.co.uk" then the use is obvious. If they have a bookshop
and you have ,say "encyclopedia.co.uk" then you have to
suggest to them that it will increase their sales of encylopedias,
or approach and encyclopedia company. Some domains,
like say "this-is-my-bookshop.co.uk" or whatever is pretty
useless,I think ,unless it has some element of a potential brand
name in it. Youve got to think, is my domain generic,in which
case it is useful in search engines, or is it a brandable name, the former
in a way being easy to sell as it is of interest to everyone in
that sphere. "this-is-my-bookshop.co.uk" is neither and as I say
in my opinion pretty useless,

Thats my thoughts. How many names have I sold ?. Maybe
50 over the years.

thats about 49 more than me!! :D
i appreciate your time in answering - I will plan on how to direct market some of my domains.

Many thanks

Does anyone think leasing is a good idea?

I suppose this works for the domain holder but isn;t a practical solution for the company involved?

I was considering setting up some online shops with my domains and then tie-ing in an existing company do provide the backend services. WIth me holding been owner of the webportal and taking a small slice of the profits?

has anyone ever got this approach to work?

Again you have to think "why am I registering this domain" ?. Am
I going to use it or sell it. Personally as a businessman I would never
ever lease domain ,I would either buy it outright or not at all.
Imagine you lease a domain and build up massive business and
then the owner says "sorry I dont want to lease it to you anymore".No
chance !!.

I think that the only names that are easily saleable are GOOD
generic ones. The rest you have to use ,or dont buy unless you
plan to use it for your own web site.

Re leasing

Hi,

For what its worth I've been researching leasing domains and quite a few of the BIG players have good systems and returns for names they own.

If a lease contract is drawn up between parties at the outset both will be covered and this arrangement works well.

Not great however if you need the money to pay for name renewals asap  I'll stick to my quick sales marketing techniques for my domains.

Regards
Danny
