I'm sitting by the window on my computer, and a short while ago I glanced out as I occasionally do, I saw a glowing orange light in the sky, called my Mrs over to have a look as I hadn't seen anything like it before.

Then another one appeared behind it coming from the left, then 3 more following that, I got the binoculars out, couldn't make out any specific shapes, just that all 5 were bright glowing orange coloured balls of light.

Couldn't hear any noise from them like you usually hear from a plane or helicopter, not a noise.

They went out over the English channel, and that was also strange, because as something gets further away, it will normally get dimmer and dimmer until you can't see it, was concentrating on the last 2 when they suddenly vanished from site at the same time, weird

Found this on Google which was also a sighting of something similar here in Sussex in 2006:

@ Dale, definitely not satellites, these were all moving in a straight line, not terribly fast, far too slow for ballons of any type, they were not far away from me and not that high up either, at first I though microlight, or helicopters, but there was no noise at all, quite eerie, aircraft usually have a small red or green light light underneath them, but these were just balls of light glowing orange.

Weather wasn't perfect, obviously it's dark and there was fine drizzle at the time, but even with binoculars, all you could see is this orange glow, no definite shape. Even in worse weather, I've never seen any aircraft that have not had underside lights and that just glowed like a ball of light, very weird stuff.

 nope, no drink, I stopped drinking in December 2007, only had one day of drinking since then, and it wasn't last night.

There was something like that I read somewhere about lanterns release for a childrens party, where they was pretty much just a candle and paper lanterns, I guess if they was the same and it wa rainy if they got wet they would just vanish ?

Nah, not possible to be lanterns, they followed the same path, too fast to be lanterns, ballons or anything like that, and the distance, as far to the left as I could look is where they came from, all the way to my far right when they vanished.

You've not pee'd nominet off have you? You know what they are like with there Alien spaceships and intergalactic space travel homing devices, maybe they were just checking your domains were still registered at that address.

Why do people always think its something else when its blatantly the above, makes me laugh when people come out with childish comments like " its a satellite ", yeah right who's been drinking now? << that would be me :p

Last year I spotted a stationary object way above the high cloud, I'd have said about 3 miles minimum, maybe more. I took the best pic I could on an old Fuji with a zoom lens, but it was still blurry (I really need to invest in a good superzoom with IS sometime.). The thing is, it literally stayed in the same spot for about two hours.
Turned out it was a loose Blimp according to the local radio station, although how it got so high is anyones guess.

We lit some Chinese lanterns 2-3 years ago.

There were 'sightings' of them on the front page of our local paper.

The stories about the 'sightings' went on for a few weeks.

What started as innocent fun for the kids gave us a hell of a lot of laughs!! :)

My daughter along with 500 others set off Chinese lanterns last night at the firework championships.

However we are in some lawless northern location so I doubt if they could have floated all the way from the badlands to the the south.

Quite a sight though, even those that got caught in the trees.

Fireworks were not bad either.

Sounds like a meteor shower to me. I saw one about 10 years ago and it was quite widely publicised after the event. It was amazing to see, as they appeared relatively low in the sky and moved in what seems like a horizontal trajectory.

Could have been a British Forces Helicopter, nar just me being silly,

i would love to see that.
might go get a load of asda carrier bags and try it with the kids:rolleyes:

No idea what it was, definitely not a ballon or a lantern, too fast for those with the distance they covered, I was having a Google today and there are quite a few previous reports of the same glowing orange orbs/lights in the Sussex area, but nobody has any idea what they are/were, apart from the observation station at Herstmonceux which is about 15 miles from me, they have said before on another report that they thought it was something to do with comets/meteor showers.
