The Investment Case for .co.uk Made-Up Brandables

It's a skill, or an Art. Some people have it some don't. I never get the argument where someone says oh my made up brandable Digitextia there's no interest. When somewhere else out there someone would come up with so Digiplex [just random examples dunno if these domains exist] and have it sold in one reg cycle.

I think there are different categories of madeup brandables, I don't think you can lump them all in together.

Just off the top of my head names like JobHunt, MoneySaver etc work very well.

Looking at denys sales page he seems to be doing pretty well with two word brandables http://buydomainnames.co.uk/domains/sold

Not sure how many domains in this style he owns in total though.

So, it looks as though it can be made to work ... if you're good enough at catching.

Category wise I suppose I could distinguish between completely made up words, and those that are combinations of dictionary words. I guess the former is more difficult to make a go of.

I think you need to combine a number of things in order to be successful in the "brandable" space:

A) A good eye for what makes a decent brandable
B) The financial ability (and stamina) to maintain hundreds/thousands of registrations for every one sale
C) The willingness to keep turning down offers again and again until they hit "big" numbers

In other words, I would imagine that most successful brandable portfolio holders find their average sales price skewing very high, but their average sell-through rate (% of their portfolio that sells each year) skewing extremely low - higher and lower respectively than for generics.

I'd classify those two as more descriptive than made-up. With each the two words work together logically. The made-up ones are those that don't appear to mean anything because they are more difficult to contrive. Some examples of famous ones: "Altria" (one I immediately liked when Philip Morris changed its name a decade ago), "Accenture", "Verizon".

Aye, in the article it said

or put two or more existing words together to create a domain name that they feel has the potential to be used as a brand

Which doesn't distinguish between the types that do work very well and the ones that are iffy.

Adding that would improve the article.

+1 on the latin, sooo many of these seemingly made up names are rooted in latin.
