FYI...

I saw this .uk ad last night, being run in what looks like an Adsense slot by the Names.co.uk registrar.

(Note: scale is wrong because of the way I screenshotted it on my phone then cropped it out of the page - it was a lot smaller than that).

you would think they would create the add using names.uk as their own URL

Yep, certainly in the ad, even if it then linked to a microsite specific to this campaign!

Saw that Nominet retweeted this the other day:

@dotuk We've been using http://www.hairdressing.uk for 6 months now and the feedback has been entirely positive. #shorterisstillsweeter

What should be considered is the outcome of this ad.

Obviously a company as large as them would be monitoring its effectiveness, and seeing what effect it has on sales.

If it has little or no effect on sales, chances are they won't be tempted to push .uk any more (plus aren't they part of a larger group of companies, which would probably follow suit)?

What I would like to see is, some launch date and end date of the campaign, then Nominet to stop sitting on their thumbs, and give us some data, from say 1 month before that, through the campaign and 1 month after, so show if it had any effect.

Names own data would be partially helpful, but many people are "fixed" on their registrar, so could be affected by their advert but go register with someone else, so nominets data is what shows a better picture.

What should be considered is the outcome of this ad.
