.uk winner checker (well a start)

*****Update this is now working for all .uk extensions and the bulk checker is now live. It now uses WHOIS2 so there should be no issue with limits.*****


I know this has been mentioned else where and I had a few hours spare so I started to put together a checker which checks for the oldest registration and tells you who wins.

I have only done .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk so far but will carry on working on .net.uk, .ltd.uk and .plc.uk. I also will put .sch.uk in when it has been confirmed what date will be used.

Additionally pre nominet domains cannot currently be checked.

Just tried it. Nice work... although my domain didn't win!

I guess the addon would be for the user to be able to submit a list and for them to be shown a list of the winners and losers.

Really nice and simple though. Good work.

Cheers for the feedback, I started by doing that but realised the 1000 lookups that it is limited to would not really last that long so I limited it. If Nominet approve my application for WHOIS2 I will sort that out.

Oh sorry, I thought it was 1000 per our individual IP addresses not specifically your tool for everyone per day.

Quick on the fly bug fix to thanks to crazihos.

Murray, using the standard Whois access it is based on my ip address, with WHOIS2 it forwards the users.

It have now added all extensions that are mentioned in the V2 docs except .sch.uk which can be added when clarification on dates is confirmed.

That would be good, do you have the documentation so I can have a look what if anything i need to change.

A side note on the whois2. In the proposed new Registrar agreement whois2 will not be available to new TAGs, if you are "self managed".

I think lots of us will be moving up to accredited, which unless I'm mistaken doesn't mean public registrar, you can be accredited by managing a 3rd parties domains, so means some of us will manage clients domains from there on, and hopefully achieve that level.

Compliance costs (in time) and probably a new fee structure (mentioned but no specifics). Joy.

I get the feeling from them saying "financial details" and "business resilience", they will want lots of personal information, and maybe even do like some merchant accounts and require a bond, who knows.

I'm just hopeful that once one of "us" makes it, the info will flow as how we can all get there with ease, wiping out the £12 fee will make sales sooooo much easier.

Some small changes you may consider:

The entry box for the string you may consider making taller as it crops the top of letters on my screen.

On your winner win - you have ignored same day registrations (unless you have access to date time stamp)
e.g. dogtrainingcourses where 2 have same date

with only one pre nom - the pre-nom will win - so you can change you win line to reflect this case (2 or more and you are correct)

Also under the current proposal the domain will only win if they apply for it,
the others domain owners can apply in case they the oldest does not apply

you have not checked .sch.uk which is on the list (but it will not return anything from the third level)
maybe you could Nominet what to do about that anomaly? (please let me know if they give you an answer)​
