Just read this story about a bloggers site being stolen. Sounds like you have no hopes if it happens to you.

One great thing about Nominet is at least you can ring them directly and they will actually be helpful.

Sorting out a .com problem through a big registrar seems it can be a big hassle to fix (if you actually can).
