Which laptop

My laptop has been getting gradually slower and slower, that with quite bit of cosmetic damage to it too and then the final straw today with me cleaning it and f'cking the keys up...

So ... Which laptop would you recommend ?

Budget £4-700

I've always been a Dell user and so will favour them but open to other brands

I have a 5 year old toshiba which is still working well (my daughter uses it daily for her homework), I did use a local company who built custom laptops, however, the recession hit them, so would probably go for another Tosh if I was replacing any of the laptops.

Do you NEED a laptop? If not, why not get a desktop and put the savings into an Android tablet to use in front of the TV? I use my tablet more than my laptop these days.

Some new ones go on ebay for sub-£600

It's the Elitebook range which are top spec. I have the older 12.1" 2530p and can't fault it, build quality is brilliant.

Had a toshiba tecra for 4yrs which has been battered 12+hrs a day. No complaints... apart from at myself for choosing Vista. But now it's windows7 not an issue.

I've just bought an Acer 5750G BLK, i5 proc, 6gb ram, 1tb hd, 1gb nvidia gc. Bought from comet for £539 and they were cheapest. Was 579 week before so probably £30 now.
reviews were good and impressed so far.

Have to agree with this. After years of spending a fortune on Vaios, laptops just don't get used here anymore. A cheap desktop with a good screen for the serious work and a tablet for all other times.

As for others saying desktop and tablet, I move around with laptop a lot and work from different locations sometimes so need laptop

Love my Macbook pro with bootcamp and windows 7 and high res screen. Over your budget but probably coolest, best quality laptop you can buy. And will hold its resale value.

I buy, sell and set up a lot of laptops and the Dell 15R is a quality piece of kit and there are quite a range of CPUs to suit your needs. I have sold quite a few of these. The Dell E series is equally good, more business oriented, slightly dearer but are much more robust and durable.

As for the Asus, I have had a few of these through recently, though not bad they are not a patch on the Dell quality.

I use a Samsung 9 series myself, but the rest of the Samsung range are probably worth a look too. The RF511 mentioned earlier is a nice bit of kit, I have just set one up for a customer.

Went for the XPS 15, not quite the thin one but could get better spec for cheaper price and size/weight isn't massive issue for me.

Depends on your usage - by the sounds of it your laptop gets to travel a fair bit, so it's got be robust, that counts out most of the pretty looking laptops.

A mac, ( bottom end is still good at about £800) or a toshiba satellite or sony would probably fit you best.

having still held on to a IBM thinkpad from 2004 - I've got to say i'm impressed with with what "levenio" (hope thats correct spelling) have done to keep the thinkpad brand in the market eye. - lots of spec for your money these days (not quite built for the road as the ol'solid IBMs though)

Is the 'Intel HD Graphics 3000 with up to 1.6GB Dynamic Video Memory' any good with the Dell 15R? As in for just playing video and basic stuff, not games?

For basic stuff like video etc.. the graphics are more than adequate.
