Dunno if I pressed something or its updated itself but every time I enter a search in Google it highlights all my search terms is ghastly colours.. how do I stop it?

I had that happen to me yesterday evening too. I put it down to user error and closed it down without thinking.
 
are you sure it hasn't updated with google toolbar, you can turn it off.

On the google toolbar >>> settings >>> options >>> more >>> find on page (untick highlight)

if it's the same as mine, it removed it and went back to normal.
