Hi Guys

Once .uk becomes firmly established, which I think it will, do you think it will lead to more people typing in [ProductName].uk to find something? I for one really hope so. Traditionally, the .com has been good for type-in traffic, I think because it is so easy to type, so maybe the .uk will help improve type-in traffic to UK domains. What do you think?

Ian, I like reading NEW content on forums. I would welcome some more NEW threads on this forum, otherwise I find it very boring. Why don't you get your thinking cap on and start some (maybe you'll find it harder than you think)?

What would you rather have?

1. Good, quality, informative posts like Edwins yesterday about Black Friday deals.

2. Very thin and pointless threads that add nothing, and are worth nothing.

This isn't the first time with you, that this has happened. You constantly keep doing it, and a look at your 'threads started' just highlights that.

To be honest, I think you paid for an SEO eBook back in 2004, and are still reading it, and treating it like a gospel (as has been told to you many many times, but it is still something that you don't listen to).

it depends on what you mean by "direct type". i know of a lot of people who when they, for example, want to go to amazon, go to Google and type in "amazon.co.uk" in the search box rather than in the address bar. i try to tell them there's a faster way but they are having none of it!

Amazing the amount of people who do this!

I was going through the logs for one of our biggest sites last week and over 3k people last month searched: ourname.co.uk in Google to get to our site!

One reason people may do this is to check if a site is secure because Google warns if it's not.

i'd like to think that was the case for a lot of it. for many in my experience, though, it's as straightforward as because Google is what comes up as the default on their browser they believe they need to "go through" that gate to "get to" the internet.

i'm not knocking them for doing so, rather just highlighting that things one takes for granted or as a given are not the way others see them......

I very much doubt that would be the reason, more a case of when the browser is open, it automatically defaults to the search box for type-in, so I suspect many do it without realising, and then click the top option instead. I'd imagine the leak to other sites can be quite significant.

I'd rather have more threads and more discussion. If you don't think the topics I start are good enough, then I would be pleased to see some better topics started by you. Most of all I just want more content, so that there is always something new to read when I visit, which is multiple times a day.

Agree that this would make the most sense.

What I was trying to say was that some people do search this way for a site for the added security. I know people who search this way.

But yes, what you are saying is going to be the main cause of why people search: domain.co.uk

Cheers

Yeah as I've just replied to Ian-d, I agree with what you are saying too.

I do still believe though that a small number of people do it for the security side of things.

Whatever though, it's nice to see users wanting to find our site. Would just rather they went direct. Wouldn't want them to end up on the wrong site!

When I say wrong I mean not ours!

it looks like Ian-d and myself thought and wrote the same response at the same time :D

i'm no expert on stats, or how the magic of Google works - is there no value, from search engine performance, ranking, index, etc, from a high number of people taking to Google to type in "domain.co.uk"? i mean, doesn't it add value to the domain due to the increase of it being a search term?

I find that .uk gets more type-ins from overseas than the .co.uk equivalent.

Most of the world outside of our own little island bubble assume that site/brand/product followed by .cctld will take them where they want to go.

That is one of the reasons why, ultimately, .uk will replace .co.uk as the default & dominant tld for the UK.
