Yacht.co.uk - I bought yacht.co.uk today, fairly inexpensive domain but expensive product - not exactly aff. territory but I thought could make a good leasable name, interested in any thoughts on value as tbh I'm not sure.

40k UK exacts per month could be a good earner if you can get a yacht sales / hire company on board.

As a directory I would say it's worth a 1k but to sell to an end user I would push for 10k, especially with the money they must turn over anually

This is a cracking domain ... I don't suppose you'd like to tell us how much you paid for it?

I know what I would do with it if I owned it ... to me, the highest available revenue stream is fairly clear ... classifieds ... but whether you can "capture" this market with a single website I'm not sure.

I own superyachts.org.uk ...

Slightly related small story here, not hijacking, but thought you might find this interesting, if not predictable!
I have trimaran.co.uk, and about 2 months ago, a guy called me who it turned out is a big player in the boating sector. He asked how much £?, so i replied asking what was he prepared to offer. After some telephone table tennis, he offers £250! I actually laughed, couldn't contain myself. So I tell him I'd have took £5k to be honest, seeing as boats of all kinds are high profit products, he'd have made it back in just 1-2 sales. At which point, he then goes on to tell me he's a real savvy self taught SEO expert anyway, and that the name doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. At which point, i said i'd get the name into top 20 Google (UK) no bother within 2 weeks. He tells me i don't know what i'm talking about, and we end the call.

Anyway, sure enough, i did a 2 pager on a redirect, now it's at 52 global, 11 local (Google). Move forward to last week, he calls me again, says OK, i proved my point, and he'll call me with a serious offer by Saturday. Guess what? The offer came in at £500! What a bell-end.

As for Yacht.co.uk, good luck with it Scott, in all honesty, with the right buyer, i'd pitch it at more like £20k. The 'multihull' crowd were the most responsive in my experience btw, they still sell single hulls too!

A nice name, and one of those 2+2=5+ sorts of names i.e. if you can get hold of the plural as well that will make the pair much more valuable still than having just one or just the other, as you will be THE go-to person for yachts in the UK.

Perhaps giving them some data on related sales from domainprices.co.uk might help convince/educate them.

As for Yacht.co.uk, good luck with it Scott, in all honesty, with the right buyer, i'd pitch it at more like £20k. The 'multihull' crowd were the most responsive in my experience btw, they still sell single hulls too!

I have worked and do still in the marine classifieds industry, have worked for several of the top sites. The market is very competitive and is not easy for companies to make their way in. There was another company that spent a lot of money about 3 years ago and are still struggling.

I think there could be an opportunity for the charter industry side of things?

BTW, if anyone's sitting on the sidelines thinking "is there still money to be made from the UK domain industry?" threads like this shout "YES"!

Of course, Scott's put in a lot of very smart effort behind the scenes, but the fact remains that he's ended up with a superb generic name at a formidably low price...

I would imagine it is extremely competitive. I guess however, the rewards are there, it's just a long path and a lot of promotion to get there. Owning a domain such as yacht.co.uk must be massively beneficial to any promotional activity you undertake, but you've still got to put all the hard work in in the first place, and do all that promotion, to reach the goal. Owning the domain alone won't make a successful business, but it will sure help massively if you decide to put the effort in. I am partly saying this because there are a few domains like this that I own and I need to get going with them.
