How best to sell a Premium Portfolio

I am reaching the point now where I am going to be looking to sell my domain portfolio and was wondering what experiences people have had selling fairly high value portfolios. I would prefer not to palm off 15% to a broker but would of course consider it.

How did you arrive at $500k - is that 500 1k names or like 5 100k names?

Does depend on quantity ? If its com and the sort the Chinese etc are mad for atm you’d only need to list prices on holding page they’ll come no problem…. If its uk and as a whole I’d say good luck? That pool would be so minuscule that if you made it know on all the forums then those that would and could buy as a whole would contact you…. If your going to break it up then its the normal business that would be interested in each individual name?

If your portfolio is worth that much, attending one of the conferences like Traffic Florida might be a good first step. You would meet a lot of relevant contacts and might be able to sell some names at the conference.

Sorry I haven't replied to posts on this threads. If anyone with a budget is interested in acquiring my portfolio (serious buyers only), please drop me a PM. It is made up of premium .com and .co.uk.

Cheers.

Are you willing to consider selling cherry picked names individually? If so, I'd like to see the list.

Have you had success using this method?

Hi Martin - sure - I will get a list together with prices and let you know soon.

Hi Ben. No I've never attended a domainer conference but am probably going to start in 2017 (OMG next year is 2017) after leaving Asia.

more and more people going asia now, nomad life.

Yeah Asia is cool. If it was easier to get residency in Singapore and it wasn't SO bloody expensive to own a car there, it would be a really good option.

S$2.5m (£1.25m/€1.59m/$1.77m) to gain permanent residency as an investor apparently. Could there be better places to obtain residency that permits mostly living abroad and don't cost anywhere near that? Was that how you were intending to try to get permanent residency? :)

Hi Marcoose - Nice to say hello from the ol'days - Let us all know how things are working out. Perhaps we can do a Turkish/Greek immigration style body-swop. You come this way- I'll Go that.

Yep, I'm still wondering what to do with myself

I still find it impossible to 'Final Value' my own Portfolio (even after 17 years thinking I've learnt) Interesting that many of us can Capture a Portfolio Value - but, struggle on a single domain value

.UK isn't my focus, but I will say that I'm often approached by people hoping to sell entire portfolios. Usually the portfolios aren't as valuable as their owners think. Plenty are downright worthless. But I've also seen many portfolios of real value – all the way up to portfolios that include individual domains worth high 6 or 7 figures.

Realistically, there just aren't many people who buy portfolios. Period. When the portfolio is quite valuable, then you'll find few buyers with an adequate budget. And when the portfolio's asking price is lower, typically that's because it's made up of many non-premium domains. In that case, buyers won't be interested in 50-90% of what they see. So they'll want to cherry-pick the best domains.

Even rich domainers don't want to spend half a million upwards at a pop. Maybe in the future that will change, as more corporate buyers are beginning to play the game. GoDaddy, for instance, has recently bought 4 portfolios that I'm aware of. And they've gone into the mid 8 figures to do so. But it's not as if the average domainer can walk up to GoDaddy and say, "Buy me out!" In any event, their interest in .UK would be minimal, I think.

I'd say selling whole portfolios is (at worst) an exercise in futility and (at best) would deliver far less money than breaking the domains up and selling them off individually. My advice is not to even try. It's simply a waste of time.

I totally agree with you ImageAuthors, lets face it most of us that have 'Played around with domains' (Rather than made it a structured Business) have a real mixed bag of domains, And of course these are likely to include 'Purely personal preference and specific industry knowledge domains' /, 'Domains that are well Past their Sell by date' / And lets face it those that you can best call 'Eye of the Beholder' So by time you remove all the above. even I would Count only about 3-5% of mine as readily saleable. I think what tends to happen with a lot of 'Historical' Portfolio holders is their best Domains (or most appealing) have already been sold-on, Then they tend to look at what's remaining with that same 'Golden Eye' that was captured in those earlier sales. I personally put very little value on my entire UK domain remnants purely because anybody studying the UK market would surmise that it never really gained the traction, most were hoping/expecting from it's earlier optimistic days

Interesting about those Godaddy Portfolio purchases though . been trying to gain some insight into that myself.
