UK Charities Second Class To Domain Squatters

Two consultations! They never consulted with me, nor with many millions of registrants like me. In fact, possibly 95% of registrants were never consulted.

The feedback they have acted upon has come from a narrow band of members with specific vested interests. There are many Nominet documents over the years that promote its fundamental support for the 'first come first served' principle of domain registrations, so Nominet should have stuck to what was a perfectly fair decision to repect this principle via aged rights, especially as .uk affects every current registrant.

Now there are .org.uk registrants in particular who are voicing their opinions and concerns, and who feel aggrieved by this decision and a lack of direct consultation. Unfortunately for them, no one is going to listen to them now, no one!

The reality is that .uk should never have been introduced anyway.

You often find the people who complain most about the outcome of a general election are the people who didn't vote.

While you may have had enough of the debate on here - others are only just finding out about it.

Like this guy Ben Furber (Digital manager for a health charity) having a rant with Nominet on twitter:
http://storify.com/benfurber/my-discussion-with-nominet-about-uk-domains

How is one more news article going to change anything? There have already been hundreds during V1 and V2.
http://www.mydomainnames.co.uk/articles.html

As I said, there was a certain amount of coordinated opposition in the V1 and V2 consultation rounds. Any grumbling this time around is going to be disjointed and disorganised.

.uk is happening. On June 10th 2014, in fact. So we can either turn the discussion towards the best way to take advantage of that - and to trying to repair some of the damage that was done by the V1/V2 "confrontations" - or we can spin our wheels in thread after useless thread on Acorn, none of which makes one iota of difference to the .uk introduction process which is already well underway.

We're at a fork in the UK namespace road.

We can take the left path: accept (not necessarily like, but face reality) that .uk is happening, and make the most of it
We can take the right path: moan and complain about the unfairness of .uk up until the introduction and beyond and achieve nothing at all.

I choose left :)

Using your prophetic analogy, you might want to consider other people for once. The people I'm on about here are the ones who:

1- Were not told there was a general election
2- Had no vote
3- Were unaware of the consequences for them of the voting power of others

Anthony, I'm curious... did you make your V2 consultation response public? I'd be interested in reading it if you had a link to share - thanks!

There were a number of people on here championing the cause for them, which is just as well because the initial proposal would have been significantly worse.

You seem to be suggesting that I want the outcome to change or that I think that new articles will change the outcome.

I am well aware that the 10th June launch is now set in stone: www.dotuklaunch.co.uk
And that registrars are already selling it...

In fact after reading the following FOI request response (99 pages) - I can clearly see it is a done deal:
https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/dcms_correspondence_with_nominet#incoming-478328

That doesn't stop issues coming up post-implementation like if a charity on the .org.uk can now DRS the new registrant on the .uk - that is what we were debating here. I wasn't trying to hurt you or anyone else or your portfolio of 8000 names.

As for V1/V2 "confrontations" I remember you doing all the shouting and I didn't even go to the meetings!

Seeing as most people here are decent people im sure they wouldn't hold a charity to ransom if they wanted the .uk. Or maybe that is an effective yardstick of the true colours of someone.

Seeing as many people on here are business people I'm sure they wouldn't hand a valuable generic domain asset over to a charity against all rational business principles.

Andrew all of the Nominet haters have taken off their badges and probably wish the subject was never mentioned on here again just in case anything should challenge the launch of .uk

They believe the Severn hundred new gtld's will crash and burn but that .uk will save the day and everything will be like it used to be in the good old days.

I'll subscribe to that, got it in one.
I think it's 1000 new gtld's

If there was any further delay in getting the uk namespace up and running again it could only be more damaging.

No offense intended Anthony, are you smoking something ?

This comment is aimed at how fantastic your expectation is, and I mean fantastic as in extraordinary or in another state of mind other than reality.

Do you have any idea the amount of man power, and time it would take to deal with just 10% of that number replying and asking questions ?

The people you need to get pissed at are the everymans registrars who represented their own best interests. Who didn't make their customers aware, but I doubt even host europe could deal with its 1 million registrations owners contacting them without crumbling.

There is no sensible way for 9.5m to have a say, the fact your suggesting it makes me wonder if you even thought that idea out. It reminds me of this time I was sat on a bus, and 2 old women in front of me was moaning about the weather, one of them and I kid you not, turned and said to the other "The government should do something about this weather, its not on".

Show me where Nominet engaged with the 9,5000,000 registrants to encourage them to have their say, rather that pointing to a few focussed meetings know only to a narrow band of people who where also up to speed with the consequences for themselves personally?

I never heard from these people during consultation stages. They have no clue what they saying or asking and what implications would be if that was otherwise. Just pure ignorance and greed.

Ok i will rephase your a clever bloke but your not the oracle of knowledge. Seeing as people on here are are decent people im sure they would hand there generic asset over to charitys at a fair price. Or do domainors who were in the right place at the right time think there something special and deserve to be uber rich semi-gods?

I sense a bag of chips on your shoulder about missing out on registering domains back in the day.

May i ask why you would feel like this bitter about those that have been successful?

Why are these (particular) charities crying foul? If Nominet had not introduced .uk, would they be asking for .co.uk version of there name to be transferred from owner to them at reg cost?

Well ..... let them trash it out with Nominet. Everyone was 'happy' until Nominet decided it wanted to unleash .uk!

Good response to this by Edwin.
You can get the link from his t*itter account.

Strangely I had another response as well, but it's been sat in a moderation queue for well over 24 hours now so I'm not sure it will ever get published.

(Not that there was anything "rude" in it - I think it automatically went to moderation because it had a number of links to relevant articles in it so their comment system thought "is it spam?")
