It amazes me how many people got sucked into this .UK bs that's going on right now.

Those domains will drop heavily in the next few years and prove to be worthless.

Why would anyone pay £450 for diving.uk??

Google is smarter folks, don't waste your money on this.

I did try to tell a few people of a website I have in .UK and they said "Did you mean .co.uk?"

    LOL

I didn't even get involved in this because I think it's stupid.

    Maybe an unpopular opinion.

The dropcatchers are banking big on this though, good for them.

Why did you search for 'diving.co.uk'? Seems to be irrelevant.

People do correct you when you say just .UK, that bit agree with, I too have experienced this. They think you mean .CO.UK.

I'm hoping that over time companies will have a change of heart, because .UK seems nicer to me. It would have to be en masse for it to work though and I'm trying to find companies that have actually done it... I've compiled a list at https://switchedto.uk

I'd settle down to read it though, because it's a long list........ :D

Until that list grows it is does seem futile and pointless. Companies don't want to switch from the norm and that is probably not going to change without some big examples to lead the way.

It also doesn't help that big brands like umbro, unitedutilities, voxi, nissan etc all lost their .UKs in the ROR rush

Seriously if some can't see how they could possibly generate more than £450 with diving.uk and a little bit of work this probably isn't the industry to be in.

It's also worth noting that Google doesn't really care about the extension. If you own the .co.uk and the .uk and you start a website on the .uk, you'll rank for the content that have on your website. Websites are about content and not the domain name extension.

If you start a scuba diving shop then it is absolutely worth £450.

You can say that about anything at inception. Bitcoin, .com, Apple Shares....
The winners are those that invested before everyone else.

Going off your example, owning a generic .co.uk is also worthless given that you typed in diving.co.uk and Google asked if you actually meant ukdiving.co.uk . All that your post actually does is prove how it doesn't matter what domain extension you have, it's authority that really counts with Google.

    Non-domainers always ask "don't you mean .co.uk".

I told a guy I know about a first name domain that is currently on auction ([name].uk), and let me tell you he could easily afford it but he told me "why would I want that rubbish? If it was .co.uk sure".

Many domainers are in a .uk bubble right now and out of touch with the real world.

I heard from a guy down the pub that his neighbour's window cleaner had told him that he wouldn't want a .uk domain due to the inherent risks of brand dilution and potential legal issues further down the line. However his apprentice really loved the .uk idea. So it's proven. Apparently though he did a bad job on the windows so not sure what to make of that.

I can't imagine anybody wanting diving.uk for £450 but someone obviously wanted it for £452 so there we go. The buyer, whom you will all note from the WHOIS now, is not a noob in the domain industry. I think that in itself is a good marker for how .uk is doing and how it will do. I regret auctioning diving.uk so soon, I think I'd have rather held on to it for a while and developed something on it then sold it. I think it will sell for 10 times the price it sold for.

All I've heard from people like OP all week is the same drivel, yet people are buying these domains. Just today I had a meeting with an associate in business who knows .uk is about to kick off and I'm now partnering with to supply .uk domains to his customers in bulk. These are end users. The market is there, if you don't know how to sell the product maybe you're in the wrong industry. Get with the times or be left behind.

Dave we get it, you, Sam and Martin hate .uk, maybe admin can put a footer on every post so that you don't have to keep reminding us yourself :D

I don't know about you lot but I'm only in this for the money, I find domains really boring which is why I rarely tell people that I buy and sell them. On the rare occasions that I do, I can see them start to glaze over and lose the will to live.

The naming committee should have released the TLD from the get go like every other country did.

By the way, you clearly know little about Google's search algo if you think that proves anything lol! Since there has been no content on diving.co.uk since it's registration, I doubt they would suggest that to anybody. You're right, Google is smart!

We are moving towards a time when extensions mean less when most visits are through search or apps. Google doesn't give a f--k what the extension is, just that it gives you the most relevant results.

Not the biggest fan of .uk, 20 years too late and I know I'd want the pairing when launching a new brand or company (to avoid confusion), but ultimately domainers are making money selling them, and domainers are speculating on making money by buying them; that funnily enough is how commerce works!

A lot of FOMO these days, a bubble indeed. I’ll answer all of you tomorrow, it’s quite late for a debate. I don’t expect people like Rob to agree with me anyway.

Who said I didn't agree? I'm just aware that because I may not see the point or value in something doesn't mean it's not there. Bitcoin has proved that. However I could easily make £450 from diving.uk so I *am* surprised you don't understand why it has value.

Clearly, that actually proves my point. Just register diving123.co.uk for £7 instead of paying you £450.

You think if diving.co.uk had been developed it would appear below diving123.co.uk? Um...ok. Notice google didn't suggest *other* undeveloped names.
