Hi All, Just wondering if anyone on here who has a website that displays ads from Google dfp and asense is familiar with the following requirements in googles new EU User Consent Policy and if you know what is required by website publishers who display personalised ads.

I don't fully understand the requirements, do you need to get users explicit consent before displaying personalised ads? Do you need to update your privacy policy to give users detailed information on how to opt out from personalised ads?

I've just spoken to a google employee, and they have said that from the 25th May google will require publishers that display ads to have a popup that gets users to consent to display personalised ads, and if they click yes, you need to pass this consent to google so they can continue to display personalised ads. If you do not get consent then she said that google would not be able to display ads on your website. This applies to any website that displays google ads.

Has anyone set this up on their own website?

@markb So does that mean ANY adsense enabled site needs the pop up ?

Hi, from what I understand, yes. Any website displaying Adsense ads, needs to pause ads and then needs to have a popup before displaying any google ads, and then once a user has confirmed they accept cookies for ad display, then you need to set some google Adsense settings to actually display ads. I cannot get any proper confirmation of this or any decent guides on how to do this. The best I have found so far is below. This is going to effect millions of website owners who use Google Adsense, so I cannot believe google aren’t providing a better solution.

If anyone can find any better info on this please let me know, as my main source of revenue is from google ads.

I think google are panicking about not being Gdpr compliant and putting the responsibility on publishers at the last minute. However it seems from my perspective it will backfire on them, as publishers don’t know what they need to do, and if they have to disable their ads, then google are going to be the ones losing out as well.

I thought I read somewhere that Google will offer an alternative solution to turn off user-specific ad personalisation (ie drop back to ad tailoring based on the on-page content, basically how Adsense used to be when it was first rolled out). No personalisation = no need to require consent.

Having said that, I can’t find the article at the mo. Has anyone come across this?

I think if you opt to display non-personalised ads you don't need a pop up?

Hi Murray, I have done this, but my google account manager said I still need to gain consent and follow their eu cookie policy. I am going to get further clarification on this next week. Even if you don’t need consent, earnings maybe a lot lower for non personalised ads. If anyone else can get further details, it would be appreciated.

Hi Murray, I have done this

@markb, where you say you've done as Murray suggested, where in the Adsense account is the bit where you opt to display non-personalised ads? I had a look in my account but can't see anything relating to that

It was in dfp, in settings, and then eu consent.

You would think Google would be more on the ball about this. Especially as it would seem their revenue is going to tank. I cant remember seeing any notifications on this via adsense account. Not having a moan... would just seem that if its going to affect every adsense account that drastically they would be sending massive red flags.

Must be worrying for guys like @markb where its main source of income

I think a lot of publishers rely on Adsense income as their main source of revenue, I wonder how many of them are actually aware that they need to make changes to their ad setup in the next couple of weeks? I only know as I was made aware today by my google account manager, however even she wasn’t sure what changes I need to make, and when I asked questions she could only point me to Google’s policy documents, which to be honest are very unclear and not really helpful.

Thats what I mean. Doesn't make sense. I would have thought googles main source of income was advertising. If 99% of their publishers havent a clue they need to do this ,and some of the people here like you @markb( youve already said you have an account manager so nuff said) dont know whats going on, then I suspect there's a massive fuster cluck about to happen. I can't see google allowing 90 plus percent of revenue disappearing overnight.

What is DFP an acronym for? I'm in the settings section in the left hand menu and there's nothing called DFP there

@gregfindley, there's nothing called DoubleClick for Publishers in my settings either, but thanks for letting me know what the acronym meant, because I don't have DFP, I thought that was something in Adsense called that, which explains why I can't find it anywhere.

The link in the first post wasn't working for me yesterday, now it is, that says DFP and Adsense are different things. The link has a link to login to DFP to change EU settings, and it appears I've never used DFP before as it's giving me start up stuff to fill out like Country / region - Time zone and Currency.

As Google search says:

DoubleClick for Publishers is an advertisement software as a service application run by Google. It can be used as an ad server but it also provides a variety of features for managing the sales process ...

I've never heard of DoubleClick for Publishers before, so I'll skip that then.

I'm looking for a privacy cookie/template to use on sites with google analytics/adsense

No registered accounts or carts or anything

Any one got anything suitable?

This is all giving me a headache

I will set it to non-personalized ads for now and see what the damage is over next few days
