Advice please. Zone file

Hi all,

Ive sold a domain (hooray! ) The buyer has said that Net Name (their registrar) has asked for a copy of the zone file for the transfer ? Does this make sense ?

Thanks Rob. Its on my own Tag. *edit.... its a relatively new tag and just points towards parking Name servers. Normally its just a transfer request isnt it ?

go to your domain manager at secure.nominet.org.uk
Find the domain, select it, and at the bottom click transfer domain.
Put the buyers email in and specify who will pay for the transfer. That's it. He then receives instructions on how to continue.

Thats what I thought. SO why would they ask for a copy of the zone file ? Not even sure 100% what it is . Isnt it a complete list of DNS records or something ? Ive heard about hackers trying to get hold of them

Nah the zone file provided by nominet is just a list of registered domains. Zone files for domains when hosted contain info about how the domain should behave and where it should point. Neither are relevant for a transfer.

Ah.. they are talking about a DNS zone file.

Here's one for example..... But they don't need it.. So not sure why they are asking.
It just contains mappings etc.

I think they might be talking about needing to retag to their tag, but whoever explained it got things muddled.

Aaaah..... so its okay to give them then ? Do i need to get from nominet? I have a new tag so other than Name servers there arent many options on nominet control panel.

You cannot give them a 'zone file' - it's not possible. It's like them asking you what Purple tastes like. When they set their hosting up *they* create the zone file and can put in it whatever they want. Just initiate a transfer via your secure.nominet.org.uk and then your end is done.

Indeed, they are trying to make you jump through a hoop the size of a polomint, just do the transfer the traditional way; they can select the tag/registrar at that point.

I my experience It is usually the larger companies that have not got a clue until you get past there front line.

Yep. Although in this case its a company who have a company dealing with their domains. It could be a fun process. Stereo companies. Double the fun.

Well you made the right choice in getting your own TAG. So you don't have to deal with script readers any more.
