Avoiding adverts

Is there a way when entering your keywords, you can exclude certain keywords?

For example, I have a few pregnancy related domains, However, some adverts sometimes come up for abortion clinics - which is obviously not what I would want to have on the site...

Hi Mr. Whizz,

We do have full control over the related searches on your domains and can happiily set 12 searches you would like to remain fixed on the page. Unfortunately, we don't have any control over the advertising which appears in the middle of the page other than by use of the keyword. Google simply return the ads determined by the advertisers' bids on a certain keyword.

I can understand the frustration of not being able to get around the pregnancy / abortion issue, but I would believe that if you tested a few keywords around the pregnancy theme, such as 'maternity' etc., then it should be possible to avoid any adverts you don't want.

I remember one customer 6 months ago who had a Rat-related domain (don't think it was Ratboy) and he complained that the top 5 ads on the page were about keeping rats as pets and the bottom 5 on the page was about how to exterminate them! However, keyword tweaking in this instance can normally give you the results you're after.

This is a big problem Jeewhizz and you're not alone in wanting to exclude inappropriate ads served up by Google. There seems to be no easy way round this as none of the parking companies have a facility to exclude certain types of ads i.e. adult or as you point out - abortion.

On Google adsense there is a facility to exclude specific advertisers but you would need to monitor site constantly to ensure that new advertisers do not appear. I know of one company that operates a 'family' filter but this is not a 'parking' facility and sites have to be hosted and ppc earnings seem quite low in comparison to namedrive and sedo.

So we as a company have steered away from all sectors that could involve adult ads such as DVD, film etc and a wide range of perfectly normal everyday business sectors which unfortunately still attract bad ads - maybe we have missed out on earnings but our conscience is clear. You could explore possibility of developing the domains but we've got a few very nice film and DVD domains that we removed from parking some time ago (because of some of the ads) and they are still lying idle. All the best.

While we're on the adult advertising line, all domains listed with us automatically go onto a non-adult feed and have any adult related searches blocked. Only domains that are clearly adult (listed in the adult category, adult header / keyword / template) are on the Google adult feed.

That's certainly a very positive move to remove all adult search results on non adult domains - are you the first parking company to do this?

I'm not really sure if we're the first. It's been in place for quite some time. Since about December I think as our feed from Google was slightly too pornographic for our liking. We have seen instances in Italy where people have advertised adult content on a non-adult keyword, but I would imagine Google have far less tracking on that kind of behaviour in Italy than they do for their English speaking markets.
We still do not, sadly, have the ability to block certain adverts from the string which Google gives us for a certain keyword, but we do our best to ensure that adult stuff does not show up where it is not desired.

Well Ed I've put you to the test... and you pass with full marks

I typed the word 'DVD' into the websearch facility of a Namedrive parked domain and no adult ads appeared. I typed 'DVD' into the websearch facility of a sedo parked domain and two very explicit adult ads appeared. So I can only assume that sedo are not using an adult filter at all.
