Just received my latest .uk renewal invoice from Daily and they have increased their 2 year renewal price from £6.50 plus vat to £9.98 plus vat.

I was quite shocked by this huge increase. Can anyone recommend any other registrar who would take a bulk transfer free with lower renewal prices going forward?

I only have around 200 and I do not envisage owning anymore than around 300 in the future.

How much would having my own TAG cost? ( just had a quick look on Nominet's site and could not find the fees list)

Getting your own tag, there is a one off charge of £400+Vat then its £100+vat per year for membership. Additionally if you wanted to catch you'd need to pay £20+Vat for Dac Access.

Can you get access to the DAC tool (to lookup more than 1,000 names a day through WhoIs) for £25+VAT without the one-off fee and yearly charge of £500+VAT in Year1?

Thanks for pointing this out Cav. I'm with Daily too and also have around 200 names with them. Very annoying to see such a steep increase. I've just had a look at Domainmonster prices and they still are £6.70 inc vat for a 2 year period so might be worth considering.

With 200 names, it would take you about 20 yrs to break even.

However if you're booking names with a 3rd party catcher, and now you do your own catching you'll save money, and if your hand regging more each month you'll save more.

You also get the advantage of being able to do free transfers and the ability to include your domain/email address on the whois to help with sales.

Where is this 2 year price of £9.98 coming from at Daily?

https://www.daily.co.uk/products/domain-names/domain-name-pricing.html - can't the OP just buy 150 or more credits to save? It's £2.65 x #yrs (+ VAT, I assume) at that rate proportional to the Nominet 2-10 year wholesale renewal rate.

From the two latest invoices they sent me; the credits are an option I am considering along with moving.

Daily's pricing doesn't always seem to match what they actually charge. Similar in the way they now charge £4.99 for changing the TAG away from them, yet this isn't stated on the 'domain' product page, or anywhere other than when you attempt to action it. The conversation I had with them was illuminating and showed a real disregard for what their website actually states, I was actually very disappointed and may consider moving away from them.

Tag changes are free and they pay £5 (+vat) for a 2 year registration. Take that knowledge into account when you are factoring their profit versus their service.

What was their explanation for not mentioning the tag change charge anywhere that either of us have found that is external to what one would see after becoming one of their customers? Could this be a case for their local Trading Standards?

There wasn't, they avoiding answering the question, twice! This was the conversation:

Me: Dear Daily, why is there a £4.99 charge to change the TAG away from Daily? According to your own website, any domains purchased or transferred IN to Daily, include a number of features advertised, including "Change Nominet IPSTAG" - no mention is made of a charge which is surely a breach of agreement? Please advise.

Daily: Unlike many other companies, we have previously kept some services (and also products) free-of-charge; the tag change being one of them. However, for overall commercial, business and general costing reasons we have now introduced a charge. Even so, we keep this to just £4.99, unlike some other companies charging double this amount.

Me: That doesn't quite answer my question though; please can you point me in the direction of where on your website it states there will be a charge, other than when you physically try to transfer a domain? On the 'domain' section, it states what is "included" with the domain, it makes no mention of a charge.

Daily: The only place on our website it states there is a charge is on the IPS tag change page. We can though waiver the fee on the domain names that were registered before the fee was introduced. We introduced the fee in August last year. Any domain you registered or transferred to us before this date we can waiver the fee.

Amazing that they would charge for something that can be automated in like 10 lines of code and then never maintained. It's almost as if they want to rip off their customers....

I think the Daily ownership/management changed hands (partial or wholly) in the last couple of years. I have noticed subtle changes (unfavourable to customers) in the way they do things since then.

I got a gold discount code ... gives me about £0.45 off the increased price per domain/year. Nothing to smile about!

No, just through their system.

On that note, I contested it with them today and they have wavered the fee on the domains I wanted to switch to my tag. Was a simple click of a button for them to remove the charge request.
