Can't explain it, but if you are just starting out, I would consider sticking to only .com and maybe .co.uk.

if there is 9000, or say 18000 local search, wouldn't be ok just to park it for that amount of traffic

Open a Google AdWords account, and use the Traffic Estimator Tool to work out the value of the traffic for a given search keyphrase. Some keyphrases are much more valuable than others, it is not about raw traffic numbers.

how about if I choose a popular one, say 'book' (dot) (foreign extension ) would that be a good investment ?

Not necessarily, it really depends on the extension. There are good investments to be made in other extensions, e.g. the recent sale of Meet.me for $450,000, but as ever, you really need to do your homework first and it's not easy.

The best place to get a feel for what other extensions may be valuable is the weekly sales charts at dnjournal.com.

We are in 2011, it will be very tough to handreg a domain that makes any significant amount on parking.
There is no direct correlation between search volume and type-in traffic. If the search volume is very high you might expect some traffic - provided you own the .com or another extension that is prone to type-in - but as you can guess pretty much anything worthwhile has been registered or tasted.
